Shit, i'm almost a senior

Post by Fobbon Lazyfoot »

So with my high school career almost at an end, I started looking into colleges. I figure since a lot of you are college-educated individuals, I'd ask for help in the search.

Right now i'm considering like a major in biochemistry or something like that. Chemistry is my best subject, and I want to go to a University or college with a good sciences department, specifically organic chemistry. The biochemical research on autism in Cambridge really interested me, but financial aid/student loan programs in other countries are confusing.

Anyone got any advice? Recommended schools? An orange? Anything?

You plan on going out of state? Staying in state?

In NY, Stonybrook is a pretty good science based school.

College educated, but not really up on the organic chemistry biz. :) By Cambridge and the reference to student aid in other countries, I'm assuming you mean the Cambridge in England? Correct me if I'm wrong. If you're considering that route, find the number for their student aid department, and they should be able to answer your questions.

You might also want to start with your guidance councilor at the high school. In my experience, many of them are schmucks, but I've heard tell of informed persons in that role. :) Request a meeting, and explain what you're after, and see if they have a list of schools that fit your line of study. A good Guidance Councilor will be able to direct you to either a school or a listing, and let you know what the entry requirements are. They might even know where or whom you need to contact to get student loan information for overseas education.

Good luck! You sound far more prepared than I was at your age, and I hope that you find what you're looking for!

Talk to people who work in the field you want to study. Find chemists, lab technicians, researchers, etc. and send these questions to them. Use Google and e-mail - you'll learn far more about various schools and the career side of it than any class or guidance counselor will tell you.

Best of luck!

Depends on what you can get financing for and accepted to.

It doesn't hurt to apply to all your first choices -- and a lot of your second and third choices too.

I went to college late in life (I had some livin' to do first) and I had to make the choice between a virtually free ride and going deeply into debt to go to a private art school (there was also the possibility of going to Haverford, where I'd be a legacy, but that was my dad's first choice, not mine).

I took the free ride.

Leave Oregon if possible. Do not go to Reed.

No guidance councilor anywhere knows what the fuck they are talking about. Hit Google and find the departments you need for financial aid abroad and your area of study. Bringing up Cambridge suggets you either have balls or grades. No matter what the case, it never hurts to try. One you do get a list down, see if you can visit the town the college is in, or at least go to their tourism board's website. Find out what people do there.

Good luck with your search! :D

Talk to some undergrad students in the major that you want to take to see how the program really is. At a lot of places, you'll get completely different answers from what the alumni, or the professors, or the general public think. The undergrad student's dont have any incentive to lie to you if the program sucks.

Livejournal (as annoying of a site as it is) and other sites like that are great for this, there's probably a livejournal community for whatever school you want to go to, if it's a decent sized school.

While I wouldn't trust the value of the general public's opinion very much, I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss the alumni- especially revently graduated alumni. Remember, at one point, they were also undergrads, and the general tone of a university doesn't change very quickly. However, an alumni is able to answer one question that an undergrad can't: 'Was it worth it?' The undergrad can tell you in excrutiating detail about what life is like right now, but he hasn't reaped the awards of his efforts yet, while the alumni has that perpective.

Have you looked into OHSU? I'm not sure if they have what you are looking for, but I do know that they were the 2nd highest rated medical/science school back when I was looking. I think they were right below Washington University. I was actually quite shocked.

UK just built a huge Biomedical Research building about 200 yards from my house. My tuition went up 5%, I have two classes where I have to pay to get the syllabi copied because the MA students teaching the class don't have copying privileges, and I have two "seminar" classes with 25+ people in them. Ahh the days of college during budget cuts from Frankfurt.

Anyway, Ickhor's idea is probably a good idea if you can. Undergrad students will tell you everything you really want to know about a program.

Some of them are probably honest but alot of the alumni i talked to seemed to talk extra good about their program for reasons of self-promotion.
