dvd copying questions
Heya all,
santa dropped a nice new dvd burner for me this christmas. The first thing i tried to do was copy season 4 of the Simpsons, for safety reasons of course (in case of fire, i have a copy in my fireproof safe ^_^).
However, using the generic software that came with my hp bunrer, i get an error message saying the dvd is copy protected.
Now, is there anyrthing i can do to avoid the protection....ie any programs you savy peeps can recommend so i can freely copy the dvds i own.
A friend offered to lend me Roxio Easy CD + DVD creator 6th platinum....will that do the trick?
is there some freeware available i can get?
any help would be appreciated....thanks

I got a dvd burner about a year ago and it took me a while to finally find the software to easily backup dvd's.
Dvd to dvd, you need dvd shrink.
1) Open dvd shrink
2) open disc which you want to be copied
3) wait for it to process
4) Click/unclick stuff you want on your copy. Since store dvd's are generally larger than the normal dvd+-r, you have to compress it some. Don't worry it's nothing that you can really notice. Make sure you have it down enough to fit on the dvd+-r
5) Click backup. It may give you a region option here, just choose 1 if you are in the united states. You must have Nero installed for this program to burn to selected drive. Nero can be bought, or downloaded from your favorite p2p program.
You only need dvd decoder if you want to put the movie on your hard drive. If you are doing that I would recommend Gordian Knot to turn it into avi.
All dvd's I have copied work fine on xbox, or any dvd player. I think one of the biggest factors in this is the kind of dvd+-r's you buy. I've had good luck with memorex. If you have any questions feel free to send me an e-mail on here.

Try installing 3rd-party DVD-player software on your PC like WinDVD. Easily acquired and it works well, plus installing it fills in any codec gaps (which is why you are getting the copy protection error) thus allowing the DVD ripper to access the film. This applies to any kind of media you put on a DVD. Strict files I have had no problem with, yet codecs run it all, and Microsoft just doesn't supply the right ones with their Media Player.

Go to http://www.doom9.org - it will explain literally all the options you have available and the way to use them all.
Note that DVD Shrink sacrifices quality of the backup for speed and ease of use. It all depends on how much you care.

I went ot Doom9.org.....found the link earlier on the dvdshrink webpage.
Fantastic site, gives great step by step details for multitudes of ways to rip dvds.
I finally got my first copies done
, using dvd decoder and dvd shrink. i found it worked best ripping the dvd to my hard drive first......and using dvd shrink is really easy. You can choose to either cut back on video quality or on quantity by chopping off extras, menus, credits, language tracks, whatever to make a DVD 9 fit on a DVD 5. I tried just compressing the video, even compressed it by 30smethiing% and the image was stilll good on tv.
Has anyone a DVD9 video to 2 DVD 5s? just wondering if thats a better option, that is splitting the movie, than shrinking it.
Thanks again for the great advice.

You can find a lot of deals on media here: http://www.bensbargains.net/
I haven't split a movie onto 2 dvds, but it's pretty easy to put the movie on one and extras on another.
