Aluminium

Post by Fobbon Lazyfoot »

So I got this old school German water canteen for Christmas, made out of an aluminum inside and hard plastic covering. Any of ya'll know if Aluminum flakes off in water? I read a lot about it coming off of pans and stuff while you're cooking with food, but never heard of water pulling it off. I know aluminum is one of those metals that's toxic.

Hmmmm.

This sounds a bit like the "Teflon scrapes off pans and posions you" myth.

Check Snopes.

 nothing has been proven yet, but the last decade there has been heavy research into the link between high levels of aluminum and alzhiemers. Best thing to do is stear clear of uncoated aluminum surfaces , including pop/beer cans, fry pans, bowls ...and any other surface you might eat/drink from. Especially if you scrape utensils across it, while cooking or eating.

Just like heating foods in any kind of plastic. Food in contact with heated plastics contaminates food which inturn reduces male fertility. Its buyer beware ...or more appropriately buyer be informed .

Aluminium is the correct international chemical spelling, just like the metric system is the correct international system of measures. Doesn't stop Americans from being deliberately different though. ;)

And don't forget that antiperspirant has aluminum in it. You are getting tons more aluminum in you through your arm pits than you ever will from pop cans and other containers.

It just worries me because I can rub the surface of the thing and my hand comes away smelling like metal. I mean I get the feeling that it's even less good for you than cans or deodorant. Least deodorant dosen't smell like copper... good thing, too.

Klast is right. You get more aluminum absorbed in your body from your anti-perspirant (not to be confused with deoderant) than from aluminum food storage containers.

Also, regarding soda cans and such. Aluminum oxidizes almost immediately in the presence of air to form aluminum oxide. Aluminum oxide is less soluble in solution than aluminum (and both are very insoluble, needing a very low pH to get any appreciable amount into solution).

You have more to fear from aflatoxins in your nutsand beans, nitrosaminesand nitrates in your bacon, polycylic aromatic hydrocarbons in your grilled meat (and grilled veggies) and all manner of crap coming out of campfire smoke.

And if you live in an urban area, near a highway, chances are you've seen more asbestos exposure than some pipefitters.

Oh.. and don't get me started about sunlight.
Correction Mr. President, I DID build this, and please give Lurker a hug, we wouldn't want to damage his self-esteem.
