frusttrating performance problems

Post by superwalrus »

I have a horribly frustrating performance problem whenever I play EQ. When I'm running around doing things, I will all of a sudden slow down and become sluggish for about 4 seconds, then it will go back to normal, then 5 seconds after that it will get sluggish again. I thought it was the video card (old specs are: 3.2 mhz, 512 mb ram 32 mb) so I upgraded to (1 gig, 64 mb video card). Im on a laptop (yes I know, laptop, but law scool requires one and I sold my desktop to buy it). After the upgrade the same system problems continue. A 3.2 mhz, 1 gig ram, 64mb video card should be able to play EQ1 without a fucking glitch.

Does anyone have any ideas on what the problem could be? I'm thinking drivers or something?

Thanks,

Walrus

The "frustrating performance problem" could have something to do with you playing EQ for 10 hours a day.

Oh, that's not what you meant...

it starts as soon as I log on. When its not lagging, it runs perfectly. I have toggled all the EQ settings and messed with all the settings in the ATI control panel. Anyone have any suggestions other than trolling? (why anyone would troll on this post is beyond me).

3.2 mhz is pretty slow, might want to get a faster processor. I think everquest requires around 600 mhz.

Seriously, it's obviously disk activity. I would make sure you don't have viruses and spyware raping your computer, which is probably what's happening. After that, if it still persists (it won't), mess around with your swap file.

i'm not very well versed on this type of stuff either, but the term "memory leak" comes to mind. Is it possible it's a bad stick of RAM?

few things... I just formatted my computer and the problem is the same as before I formatted. Also, I just installed new ram and it does the same old thing. It has to be something with my computer other than memory and video card. Swap file? I don't know how to access it on XP, just the older forms of windows, whats it under?

okay, increasing the swap file greatly improved performance, but after a few zone loads it still starts slowing down, although not as much. Is there anything more I can do to get rid of this? Can I increase my swap file more than 1.5 times my memory? Does having service pack 2 on this badboy mess it up?

Thanks for all the help,

Do you find that your zone time goes up the longer you've been playing, even if you're zoning into something less complex, like somewhere old world?

I guess, Im not really sure. My problem gets worse the more zones I go through, regardless if their old or new world.

Please take no offense to the following, none is intended but reading your post every time it said the same thing to me... defrag. Have you defragmented the harddrive often if at all? If not that will make your computer seem like a demon, and yes fragmentation levels are usually highest after reinstalls.

What video card do you have exactly? Has this computer ever run everquest properly?

I had the same problem running eq on my laptop. I did 2 things (after spending months searching the tech board, someone else on a laptop came up with solutions): check power options under control panel and make sure the setup is for home/office desk. The other option was go to http://www.diefer.de/speedswitchxp/ and download speedswitch (assuming you have winxp) - this will change the power options to speedswitch btw. I haven't had issues since I did this (and basically was doing the same thing you are doing)

Hope it works for you! :)

I had a geforce 5200 go 32mb, and now I have an ATI M9 9000.

I defragged, I changed power options and I downloaded that switch XP thing. The same problem still persists.

And no, EQ has never run well on this computer, but that makes no sense because this comp is 10 times the recomended settings for EQ.

I am going to be offering $25 to the person that can come up with a solution to my problem. My e-mail is r_porter@pacific.edu

I think it's just the hardware. I don't think that kind of video card will run EQ smoothly. Laptops don't have the greatest 3d performance.
