The Last Of Us

Post by Taxious »

The reddit gaming community was hyping this game up quite a bit but I'd say it's not exactly my cup of tea so far. I love zombie games, but I don't like splinter cell type games at all. I hate having to sneak around for every encounter, only to have it be completely lost if you get seen / heard. That idea seems really dull to me. I do like that they successfully scared me within 10 minutes of playing it though!

I really don't enjoy playing a game I have to spend the majority of time sneaking around.

I don't enjoy sneaking around at all and remember giving Splinter Cell a couple hours before taking it out of my xbox 1 and never playing it again. The Last of Us has really good story telling elements though that partially make up for the boring game play. I also like how creepy / realistic they made it, I've jumped out of my chair more than a few times while playing so far. Given all the hype it has gotten, I'm going to try and finish this one even though I hate the sneak factor.

I never played Uncharted, but both main characters are attractive, if that's what you mean? :P (what is it about zombie/survival games having a hot black-haired main character?)

Going to avoid spoilers here, so read with ease.

I've all but Platinum'd TLoU. Only Trophies I'm missing are the multiplayer, and I have negative interest in online console multiplayer PVP so I'll never get those.

This was my first foray into a "stealth" game, but it's only superficially so. I'll get into that later though. This is the first current-gen game I've actually beaten since...Metroid Prime 3? The first Dead Rising? Well, it's been forever, so whatev.

The story, characterization, and voice acting are absolute top-shelf for games. Characters' body language and voice acting are of particular note, as I've never seen body language in standard gameplay, and this is hands-down the best VA I've seen in a console game. The story itself is solid, but features a number of the standard cliches. The graphics are the best I've seen personally. Take this all with a grain of salt given my relative inexperience with current gen consoles.

Gameplay is supposed to be hybrid action/adventure and stealth. Think RE4 meets MGS, I guess. In reality, it's pretty easy to play it as either a pure action/adventure or pure stealth game, with a few exceptions where one or the other is truly forced. I found it incredibly frustrating at first, being unfamiliar with stealth combat, but I adapted by the end of my first play.

The story is broken up into seasons. You start in Summer, though it never explicitly says so. The story tells you when Fall, Winter, and Spring begin. Most people seem to think the game's pretty boring until you're about halfway through Summer, and it really picks up in Fall. My first time through, the end of Summer is where the story hooked me so good that I didn't care about how annoying I found the gameplay. And the end of Fall had me genuinely anxious and frightened for the characters.

Now, I'm going to let you in on a secret regarding the gameplay. This could be spoileriffic, though not in any way for the story. It's just gameplay spoilers - exploitable mechanics that will likely let you play in a manner you'll enjoy more.
Hidden Information!
You don't have to play it as a stealth game if you don't want to.

NPCs (primarily Ellie, but there will be others you encounter) will give you shit that you need. Out of ammo? Tess or Ellie will, given enough idle time, give you ammo for any of the guns you currently have. Low on health, out of health kits, and without the materials to make one? No sweat - they give you that shit, too. Every difficulty. NPCs give you shit you need. This allows you to be much more Rambo than the game lets on. Once you get a shotgun, you can just about run-&-gun everything with OHKO headshots at mid-close range. And enemies are very likely to drop ammo if they're killed while you're out.
Keep in mind, they won't do this if they're busy with their own enemy, are otherwise engaged or are on the other side of the zone. And there are areas where you'll be flying solo, or for other reasons your NPC won't give you stuff. These are pretty few and far between.
Overall, it's definitely worth playing through for the story if nothing else.

We must be playing on different difficulty or something. If I don't try and sneak around, I die within 5-10 seconds of making myself known. My allies help me out with resources occasionally, but it's no where near often enough to survive. (I much preferred how this system worked in Bioshock Infinite)

..Honestly, I half want to play this game just to see if they tried to model the clusterfuck that is the I376/I279 intersection at the Point, and how much they had to change it to keep people from suspending disbelief.

It's not that bad. I only ended up on Liberty for some unknown reason about 40% of the time.
