People get fired for jokes?
Anyone else hear about this http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2013 ... s-attacks/
Now, I'm not very knowledgeable about these sort of companies. Hell, I don't know what a dongle is. Sounds like a funny name for a penis, though. So it came as a surprise to me that someone making a joke about it in a conference would get fired. Then the person who went public about said jokes would get fired. Is the world really that uptight now? No penis jokes in a room full of grown ups?
Maybe I'm the wrong one for questioning this, but hell... I once told a team GM he could knock 10k off my contract if he let me stick it in his daughter's ass. He looked at me dead-pan and said; "15 for her ass. 10 for her mouth." So needless to say my world is a little bit different.

Re: People get fired for jokes?
Saw that. Guy gets fired for a nerd joke at a developer conference about a big dongle, and the chick that tries to publicly shame him gets fired too. I'm leaning toward thinking the chick that tweeted it was the bigger asshole, though it seems like there was plenty of asshattery to go around. They guy that made the joke in poor taste should've been made to apologize, but I don't think he should've been fired. Getting fired for making a public spectacle about a joke in poor taste and taking away the whole focus of why you're at a developer conference in the first place... yeah, maybe, but still seems a bit harsh.
To the dude who got fired: Dude, you're on the clock. Grow the fuck up, and save that shit for the after party. If anyone even invites you.
To the chick who got fired: Chill the fuck out, and if you think someone is being a douchebag, be the better person. You're on the clock, too.

I was going to link this in the Stubenville thread, but decided not to muddy the waters. Nothing like butting in on a conversation not involving you......taking their photo and posting it online, and then reporting them for rather innocent (if crude) comments not directed at you which results in their expulsion from the event and eventual dismissal from their jobs......and then gloat about it on your blog.
*edit* Interesting. Since first reading about this incident it seems that the Devs in question were not asked to leave.....and now she has been fired herself for how she handled the incident.

Devs deserve a formal warning at most (unless there was a pattern and they'd had previous warnings). Girl deserved a formal warning at least.

Re: People get fired for jokes?
The link I gave on this had their Editor (I think?) post his own editorial about the whole situation and it basically mirrored my thoughts exactly. Similar to what Freecare said, I don't understand how anyone lost their jobs over this. Yeah, she is an over-sensitive twat, who couldn't be grown up enough to just turn around say; "Hey guys, I don't appreciate those kinda jokes and I'm really trying to enjoy the conference, could you keep it down?" and the douchebags making bad jokes should learn to shut the fuck up. How do you fire someone for either of these?
Sidenote; Did anyone see the comments this woman posted on her blog conveniently located at www.butyoureagirl.com? The implications of the name of the host site aside, she had this to say:
Shitty situation for all involved and I can't help feel like the companies of both parties really only made themselves look silly here. A firm reprimand would've been enough for both parties.

That is the most contrite, hyperbole laden bullshit I've ever seen. I like how she drops her volunteer work in there. What a twat. I won't condone what the two idiots said, especially given the venue they chose to do it, but she makes me really want to.Jesse was on the main stage with thousands of people sitting in the audience. He was talking about helping the next generation learn to program and how happy PyCon was with the Young Coders workshop (which I volunteered at). He was mentioning that the PyLadies auction had raised $10,000 in a single night and the funds would be used the funds for their initiatives.
I saw a photo on main stage of a little girl who had been in the Young Coders workshop.
I realized I had to do something or she would never have the chance to learn and love programming because the ass clowns behind me would make it impossible for her to do so.
I calculated my next steps. I knew there wasn’t a lot of time and the closing session would be wrapping up.

In the real world, you should ALWAYS think other people are uptight until they say some fucked up shit in front of you....with witnesses. Then its all tit and cock jokes.

Re: People get fired for jokes?
I think this was handled so poorly. All around.
While I understand why a woman might get tired of the male-macho bullshit that occurs in the tech. industry (it's there, trust me), this woman had a choice. Okay, take a picture with your phone and show it to the convention people. They probably would have gotten booted from the con. Case closed. But, but going online to publicly shame these men (especially when they haven't broken any laws, they just broke the rules of the convention that deal with professional behavior), was taking it too far. And that's why she got fired.
I also believe that she didn't demand these men get fired, she showed the convention folks the image on the phone and explained what happened. Then, she posted the image online. The company who employed the men fired them. Then her company fired her. Everybody gets the firing.
It just feels like everyone's so afraid of a lawsuit that they'll simply cull the offending limb instead of trying to learn from it. Dumbasses all around.

I believe in G rated to PG rated jokes, in any situation. (See: Full House)
Naughty jokes are fun, but neutral jokes are even better for the cheesy-factor.

Correction Mr. President, I DID build this, and please give Lurker a hug, we wouldn't want to damage his self-esteem.

Re: People get fired for jokes?
I'd like to say I splurged and went for the ass, but sadly it was out of my price range. Rumor had it that a few other guys that had come through the system went about it the old fashioned way with good ol' Jack Daniels as their wingman.

Yeah, I was going point out that you could probably manipulate her into butsecks for much less than $15k and bypass the middleman.
