The New Pope

Post by Massterloo »

At 76 he doesn't have a lot of time to do his thing. I figure in 5 years we'll have to endure the media's none stop coverage of the pope search. In that time I hope he is found out to be some escaped Nazi's wife, or makes up some fucked rulings. If for no other reason Jonathan Pryce would be perfect to play him in the movie.

Average Pope lasts 8 years, so good chance we'll be through the media circus again soon. Fun isn't it?

Mad-as-a-hatter popes seem thin on the ground lately. Need someone to spice it up, for sure! I was going for Pope Nancy the First, but was disappointed.

I'll never be anything close to religious but I am digging this new Pope so far. He's done some pretty open minded things which is completely out of character for the Catholic Church. Of course it could be all a PR campaign to divert us from the crazy.

Same. I normally *despise* organized religion and religious leaders with very few exceptions, and the new pope is one of those exceptions (along with the Dalai Lama) for me. Are we finally seeing spiritual evolution from one of the institutions that has traditionally been the biggest obstacle to spiritual evolution?

Ahhhh... the devil is in the details, isn't it? (Pun intended)

The average length of time a Pope serves hasn't really changed over time. Probably due to the fact the Cardinals elect a Pope in the latter years of life (adjusted for timeframe and average length of life at time of election). What HAS changed though, is informational flow over time. I think it can be safely said that a Pope today deals with many more issues in his average 8 years than a Pope 500 years ago. Or even two hundred years ago.

My point... a Pope today confronts many more issues in his 8 years than a Pope of several centuries before. If the "issues over time" were normalized, I think you'd see Popes of today handle a number of issues in thier 8 years that would take a Pope of a few hundred years ago a century to handle.
Correction Mr. President, I DID build this, and please give Lurker a hug, we wouldn't want to damage his self-esteem.

Probably very true.
