Re: Need New Book Series
I love Abercrombie, though the First Law is (I believe) his first works. He only gets better.
Have you read any of Scalzi's work? I've heard good things about him from numerous sources.

Re: Need New Book Series
Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn series (4 books so far) or The Stormlight Archive (2nd comes out this year, 1st book The Way of Kings was awesome) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brandon_Sanderson
Robin Hobb's Farseer Trilogy (3 books, followed by 3 in the Tawny Man series - actually there is a ship trilogy in the middle, but it's not necessary to know what is going on in Tawny Man)http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robin_Hobb ... er_Trilogy
Stephen R. Donaldson's The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant (Embar recommended this one long ago) There are three trilogies, but I've only read the first trilogy http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephen_R._Donaldson

Check out The Night Angel Trilogy by Brent Weeks, its freaking fantastic.
Also checkout Kingkiller Chronicles by Pat Rothfuss (2 books out so far).
Really liked The First Law trilogy myself, haven't checked out any of Abercrombie's other works.

Re: Need New Book Series
I'm really not extremely particular. I can handle fantasy, but I like gritty, darker stuff. Realistic, not necessarily in environment, but how people act. The Disney'esque, all the good guys live, all the bad guys die, hero saves the day bullshit is not for me. Same reason I love The Walking Dead & this First Law series. You never knew what was going to happen. Bloody Nine flipped his shit, stabbed his buddy through the neck & then slaughtered a fucking kid. Wow! That kinda stuff makes me tingle on the inside.
Also, the reason I stress series is I hate endings. 1 book is rarely ever enough for me. The Repairman Jack series was 23 books long & I fucking LOVED that.

I just started the Night Angel Trilogy and am loving it, I've also had the Rothfuss Kingkiller Chronicles on my highly recommended by others list, so I need to get going with that one.Fallakin Kuvari wrote:Check out The Night Angel Trilogy by Brent Weeks, its freaking fantastic.

Rothfuss is good, but his hero can be a little, uh... whatever the male version of a Mary Sue is (super awesome at everything, a massive stud and whatnot). But, he has great writing.
You try the Dresden Files? That seems to be a hot series right now (but only 2 books).

Re: Need New Book Series
I had a hard time getting into the series on television, have you seen it and are the books better? I know they must be pretty decent since they are so popular, but the tv series didn't grab me so, I kind of meh'd out on looking into the books. In all honesty, unless it's FANFUCKINGTASTIC, I'm kind of fickle and take a good 3-6 shows to get into anything. It's not a matter of quality, it's just a matter of my quirky tastes.
On a side (book) note, I got to meet Brandon Sanderson and Robert Jordan's wife Harriet McDougal at the Memory of Light booksigning. He's engaging and awesome, and she is completely delightful (I can't imagine a better word to use for her). She told sweet little intimate stories about Jordan and the writing/editing process (she edited all his books) and Brandon is like every cool nerd you love wrapped in one. He's intelligent, funny, a bit awkward, down to earth, and a huge tabletop gamer. He has competed here in the past and is coming back here to compete again in a Magic tournament in like....2014 or 2015. They were so gracious and attentive. I've never met two nicer people at a book-signing.
You know how some authors really disappoint you - like Orson Scott Card being a massive homophobic misogynist. As long as women are subsurvient and not gay (though he likes going off on female authors like JK Rowling), they are cool....but oh the gays in general, they are some bad business. In the 90's he wrote about how gay sex should remain illegal and gay citizens shouldn't be equal citizens, then in 2004 he went off about the gay agenda being like Alice in Wonderland pulling society into a rabbit hole where the reality of marriage, is being distorted. Followed by 2008 where he COMPLETELY recommends the overthrow of the Government if Prop 8 was struck down. Of course like an Ann Coulter, he says hateful things then paints himself as the victim of liberals or some bullshit and then proceeds to further paint himself as a gay-hater by writing a retelling of Hamlet "Hamlet's Father" where everyone is gay because Hamlet’s father is a gay pedophile who, by molesting them, turned Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, and others gay.
Anyway Enders Game and that series are very good, but he's a massive douche bag.

A db.. and probably a closet hmosexual as well, seems like a lot of the vehemently anti-gay people turn up to be pole smokers themselves.
If you want some page-turing mind-fap, check out the Sandman Slim novels by Kadrey. I loved 'em. No grand fantasy space opera or epic king/elves/orcs and magic, but they are dark, hilarious, with great characters, and they're great fun.

Correction Mr. President, I DID build this, and please give Lurker a hug, we wouldn't want to damage his self-esteem.

The Dresden Files has 15 books. You might be thinking of the graphic novels.Alluveal wrote:You try the Dresden Files? That seems to be a hot series right now (but only 2 books).

I've been collecting the Absolute Sandman graphic compilations, I have three of them so far...the heaviest biggest books I've ever owned. They are fabulous though.

Harlowe, something just clicked with Dresden. I think you asked about that? (Sorry, I'm lame)
I never watched the television series, but the books are fun. You can tell that the first one is from a new writer because you can kind of see him getting better as the book goes on. The second one also improves. Fast reading and entertaining.

Re: Need New Book Series
I read an interview where Jim Butcher said something about that, like it's great that people want to start from the beginning and read all the books in order, but that means they need to start with the one he wrote as a newb writer in his 20's.Alluveal wrote:Harlowe, something just clicked with Dresden. I liked the TV series, and without it I might have never actually found the books. Luckily the actors for Dresden and Bob weren't horrible choices since those are the two I see when I read the books now.
