Paranormal Activity 3
These movies still deliver in the tension and can make you feel a little unsettled being in your dark, quiet house late at night afterwards. The ending for this one kind of took me out of the tense-this-shit-is-getting-real feeling I had through most of the movie, but it had enough tense SURPRISE scares through out the beginning to still make it a good no frills, things-that-go-bump-in-the-night kind of scary movie.
Gory scary movies don't scare me, they just gross me out and make me feel like I lost a little of my humanity, so I appreciate these cheesy home-movie ones just for their ability to give me the heebie jeebies and make me tense the entire film.

Re: Paranormal Activity 3
I only ever saw the first one and I gotta be honest, I finished it wondering what the fuck all the hype was about. Not once was I frightened, surprised, tense, etc. It felt like one of the most monumental wastes of time I'd ever engaged in. It was especially disappointing because ghost shit creeps me the fuck out (For as much as I'm sure Ghost Hunters and the shows like it are staged, they still give me goosebumps. I've also tried numerous times to play Fatal Frame, and I freeze up during the ghost fights).

Anytime something gets hyped, it seldom if ever lives up to it. I don't like seeing something once it's hyped, you always go in expecting something amazing.
The scare in these is just subtle and real life creepy. I like these because they do make me tense or jump a little and creep me out, most other scary movies never actually scare me at all because they don't relate to real life in the least, they are big productions, so you're entirely removed.

Re: Paranormal Activity 3
I'd feel sheepish liking these, but it got a 71% on Rotten Tomatoes (same as PA 1), that's pretty damn good for a scary movie. PA 2 wasn't as good and 54% rating on RT definitely reflects that. PA 3 "While the jolts and thrills are undeniably subject to the diminishing returns that plague most horror sequels, Paranormal Activity 3 is a surprisingly spine-tingling treat"
Speaking of scary movies since it's nearly Halloween, I just watched "Stake Land" and that was actually a decent bleak vampire/virus/everything goes to shit kind of movie. 75% on RT. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1464580/
You're constantly wondering what the next shitty thing around the bend is.
What are your top scary movies? Not just gross, chop them up movies, not the great quality ones (i.e The Shining or Silence of the Lambs) but ones that actually gave you the chills, made you tense the whole time or gave you the creeps.
1. The Exorcist - this is the one I saw as a kid and scared me so much all ghost/demon/haunting/house creepy shows scare me the most, so any exorcism type movie could go on this list
2. The Descent
3. The Orphanage
4. Rec (2007) not the US remake quarantine
5. The Ring and The Grudge (Ju On) (again the originals not the remakes)
6. 30 Days of Night
7. PA 1 & 3 (2 had a few moments, but overall wasn't as tense)
8. The Thing (1982)
9. Silent Hill
10. High Tension

Re: Paranormal Activity 3
What sucks is that very few scary movies ever actually scare me. As a result I don't make a habit of actually watching them, because they always feel like a waste of time. It also doesn't help that the bf can't stand horror flicks, and I have very low motivation to watch movies alone.
In no particular order:
1. Human Centipede (I know, you said "Not just gross, chop them up movies," but this one made me squirm. I know, it's gore porn, but gore tends to get me)
2. Silent Hill was alright. Definitely qualifies as "excellent" for being a movie translation of a video game, and extra points for being from the horror genre on top of that. It had a few plot holes, and the lady that played Cybil couldn't act her way out of an empty room, but whatev.
3. The Ruins creeped me the fuck out.
4. Poltergeist. Classic.
5. Any of Romero's original Dead trilogy + Night and Dawn remakes.
6. Event Horizon. Rewatched this recently (Made the bf sit through it
) and it wasn't as impressive as I remembered it, but still very creepy.
(Edit): 7. Saw. Only the first one. Which also brings me to:
8. Se7ev.(/Edit)
Um...I'm sure there are others, but I just can't think of them. I think another problem is I got spoiled on horror novels. King's early books are fucking terrifying (How the hell do Pet Sematary and It go from nightmare-inducing novels to laughing-at-them-not-with-them campy cheesy incredibly fucking stupid movies?! (Random side note: Both are slated for remakes. Ugh)). House of Leaves...that book is fucking creepy as all hell. Poppy Z. Brite's Lost Souls and Drawing Blood when I was an angsty teenage fag. World War Z.

Re: Paranormal Activity 3
I love scary/horror/gore movies!
These are the ones that I can remember off the top of my head that really irked me:
The Cell
The Descent
The Exorcist
The Strangers
Se7en
Others that I find pretty good:
Joy Ride
Event Horizon
28 Days Later
Insidious
Jeepers Creepers (first part of this creeped me the hell out, definitely got more stupid as the movie went on)
Hostel
I'm pretty surprised you thought Human Centipede was scary. Definitely gory, but I didn't find it too suspenseful or anything. Did you see the trailer for the second one?
The gay horror film Hellbent was actually decent.

Re: Paranormal Activity 3
Do you guys have certain films from your childhood that freaked you out? I had nightmares for a month or two after seeing Terminator 2. Watership Down got to me as well as Neverending Story.
Hell, this still creeps me out quite a bit.
If you come any closer, I will rip you to shreds.

Re: Paranormal Activity 3
I really liked the first Paranormal Activity movie. Haven't seen the 2nd or 3rd but want to.
I think it's because movies that have to do with evil (or demons/ghosts that can actually harm a person) really freak me the Eff out.
Like Harlowe, I'm so not into gore. It's just too over the top and stuff for me and almost to aware of itself these days. I think with a film like Paranormal Activity it might have more of a crowd interaction element. When I sent to see Paranormal Activity in the theater, it was full of people who were really getting into the film really letting themselves submerse in the experience and that made it even better, imho.
I went again with a friend and some people in the crowd were being stupid asshole movie goers and laughing at parts that should have been scary, and making loud, rude comments throughout. Had that been my first experience, I would have probably not enjoyed it.
Going back to the evil element . . .
That's what really scares the hell out of me. Se7en did not scare me in the least, but it was great drama. Same with Silence of the Lambs.
Stuff like Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Psycho, Dawn of the Dead, not so "scary" to me. Maybe more jump out startle, but nothing that made me fearful.
Scariest movies to me were:
The Exorcist
The Descent
Halloween
The Prince of Darkness (I know, it has NOT aged well, but man that shit scared the hell out of me when I was younger... that thing coming out of the mirror).
The Shining
Most of the above have that good vs evil supernatural element. There are a few non-supernatural flicks that freaked me out:
The Thing (Carpenter's)
Alien

Re: Paranormal Activity 3
Our lists and reasoning are pretty similar! Prince of Darkness was pretty damn scary back then - so was Salem's Lot, Prophesy (a log company's waste mutates the environment, creating a giant killer bear-monster) and some Grizzly movie (none of these hold up well). Those old movies were on a cheesy friday or saturday night creature-feature type show.
Gore movies don't scare me (or things like The Shining or Silence of The Lambs - all good and thrillers, but not scary), gore movies make me feel like I've lost some of my humanity just having those images in my head floating around - that's why I have no desire to see pictures of crime scenes or dead dictators etc. There is just something dehumanizing about them for me. I know the difference is the crime pictures are real and gore movies aren't, but it's all about the image.
Now supernatural/demonic (maybe it's the Catholic upbringing) scares the bejeesuz out of me, even though I'm agnostic. I guess that seed of guilt and fear is pretty strong!
I remember first seeing Amityville Horror(the old one) and it scared the shit out of me, I was afraid of boathouses...actually houses on lakes in general. The Exorcist gave me a creepy feeling about our attic and fear of demons in general. Jaws made me afraid of the ocean. All of these things went away of course, but initially they had some power especially if you are young when you saw them.

Gore doesn't "scare" me, but it freaks me out. I can't watch medical shows/operations and stuff for the same reason.

I found the first Hellraiser to be creepy scarry, and the original "The Thing from Another World", which John Carpenter remade as "The Thing" scarred the crap out of me when I was a kid. Also there was another movie which I cannot even remember the title in which gargoyle statues came to life and started attacking people also made me hide under the covers as a kid.

Re: Paranormal Activity 3
First off, wtf is up with my damn typing/spelling in that post? Wuuuuut??????
Second, Harlowe, Amityville hella scared me. The book scared me even more. That "GET OUT" voice still gives me the shivers just thinking about it.
Hellraiser freaked me out. It didn't "scare me" but it was such a wild, mind-f*** idea. It really stuck with me after seeing it. The novel was pretty dang creepy too.
Exorcist 3 was pretty creepy.
You know those "A Haunting" shows that you would find on cable? (Forget the channel, A&E maybe). There were a few of those that literally made me unable to sleep as a grown woman.
The gore just, I dunno. I remember being shocked by it when I was younger but nowadays, they don't let you care enough about a character to BE shocked anymore. And, like Harlowe suggested, you just feel like you watching gore-porn.

The original Hellraiser is the only one of those that really interest me. Not a big fan of the genre. I did like Creepshow though. Maybe a couple Stephen King movies. I guess The Stand falls into that genre as well as Dreamcatcher and a few others of his movies that I really like. Tommyknockers too.
