There's a really simple solution to the whole thing, let them have their civil unions and we'll keep our marriages. Marriage is more of a religious sacrament anyway so its a fight that the GLBT crowd should take up with the church, not with the state.

Pretty much. The government should only be involved in civil unions. The church should be able to marry who they want and not marry who they don't want.

Of course, it will take a tectonic shift in politics to ever get THAT through.

Yea, I think the government should do its own thing for everyone. Then, if the churches want a cute ceremony, they can have it. I personally don't care what we end up calling it. Marriage and marriage wouldn't bother me.

Actually The University of Iowa has (arguably) the best creative writing program in the United States. I would imagine they have quite a mixed bag of residents in/around college towns. Artists are always an eclectic and varied bunch.

Maybe I need to travel to other art colleges, but for here, that's bullshit. Most seem to be bible thumpers.

Well, look at Colorado. You have Denver (liberal) and Boulder (Nazi liberal) and Fort Collins (Liberal.) So liberal that Denver passed a "yes you can carry 1 oz or less of pot" type law.

Then about an hour south of Denver you have Colorado Springs, the zion for the "Focus on Family" people and a whole assload of religious right-wingers that would make Jerry Fallwell pee in his pants out of sheer orgasmic joy.

Maybe Iowa has the same deal going on. Some Bible belt freaks and a bunch of hippy libs that have encroached on their territory and become the silent majority. :)

Either way, welcome to the 21st century.

Go Iowa!

I meant those that go to school here. Most of us are from out of state and we have a lot of internationals. I see more super conservatives here at school than anywhere I've ever been before. You'd think an art college in Georgia would be where a more diverse set of beliefs would gather.

Yeah, you know, it probably is very diverse for Georgia. You probably have ten different kinds of bible humpers and priest fellators.

Jews get married. Atheists get married. It's not like marriage is a christian thing.

I did not see where Fal claimed marriage was a Christian sacrament. He is correct that historically marriage is a religious sacrament.

So in my view the government should limit its involvement to the contractual issues as it does now with traditional marriages in which case there is no legal reasoning to discriminate against GLBT couples as their property and custody disputes are no different from anyone elses and churches can choose who they wish to marry according to their beliefs.

If a GLBT couple wishes to marry in a church and can find one that will do it then by all means.

It does not diminish marriage to broaden the scope.

Guess I need my Klast (tm) decoder goggles to find the word "Christian" in that original post.

Top 17 Reasons Why Gay Marriage is Wrong

17. Gay marriage will change the foundation of society; we could never adapt to new social norms. Just like we haven't adapted to cars, the service-sector economy, or longer life spans.

16. Gay culture is a new fad created by the liberal media to undermine long-standing traditions. We know this is true because gay sex did not exist in ancient Greece and Rome.

15. There are plenty of straight families looking to adopt, and every unwanted child already has a loving family. This is why foster care does not exist.

14. Conservatives know best how to create strong families. That is why it is not true that Texas and Mississippi have the highest teen birthrates, and Massachusetts, Vermont, and New Hampshire have the lowest. This is a myth spread by the liberal media.

13. Marriage is a religious institution, defined by churches. This is why atheists do not marry. Christians also never get a divorce.

12. Children can never succeed without a male and a female role model at home. That's why our society has no single parents.

11. Gay marriage is not supported by religion. In a theocracy like ours, the values of one religion are imposed on the entire country. That's why we have only one religion in America.

10. Obviously gay parents will raise gay children, since straight parents only raise straight children.

9. Straight marriages are valid because they produce children. Gay couples, infertile couples, and old people shouldn't be allowed to marry because our orphanages aren't full yet, and the world needs more children.

8. Gay marriage should be decided by the people and their elected representatives, not the courts. The framers checked the courts, which represent mainstream public opinion, with legislatures created to protect the rights of minorities from the tyranny of the majority. Interference by courts in this matter is inappropriate, just as it has been every time the courts have tried to hold back legislatures pushing for civil rights.

7. Straight marriage will be less meaningful if gay marriage were allowed; the sanctity of Britany Spears' 55-hour just-for-fun marriage would be destroyed.

6. Civil unions, providing most of the same benefits as marriage with a different name are better, because "separate but equal" institutions are a good way to satisfy the demands of uppity minority groups.

5. Straight marriage has been around a long time and hasn't changed at all; women are still property, blacks still can't marry whites, and divorce is still illegal.

4. Legalizing gay marriage will open the door to all kinds of crazy behavior. People may even wish to marry their pets because a dog has legal standing and can sign a marriage contract.

3. Gay marriage will encourage people to be gay, in the same way that hanging around tall people will make you tall.

2. Being gay is not natural. Real Americans always reject unnatural things like eyeglasses, polyester, and air conditioning.

1. METEORS and VOLCANOES.

In that context it doesn't make a lot of sense. You are right. I started to respond to the individual post, then got sidelined. When I came back I responded to the thread as a whole.
