Many years ago I used to be a supervisor in a telephone survey research firm. I managed the night shift. I supervised 30 people who worked there for 6 bucks an hour (about 9.50 in today's money) part time nights. Out of the 30 people 4 of them also had full time day jobs. They worked 70 hours a week. At 10 bucks an hour that's $36,400 before taxes.
Then there is the president of my company. He's somewhere sunny right now. He takes about 8 weeks of vacation a year. Usually in Mexico or the Caribbean. When he is here in town, he comes to the office about twice a week. He play's a lot of golf. A LOT of golf. And not business networking golf. Just having fun because he likes it golf. He takes home about half a mill before taxes. How do I know this? He gave is daughter a job here. She doesn't work very hard, but she sure does gossip.
That guy on that video may have worked a hundred hour week once in his life. Maybe he works till 6 or seven each night and says he works that much because once in a blue moon he works till 8 or 10 for a couple days. His claim of sleeping 26 hours a week because he works so much is pretty dubious. That works out to 3 hours and 40 minutes a night. With that little sleep memory and reasoning ability are severely impacted. You have all probably gone on short sleep like that a few times in your life. You know that after just a few days you start turning in to a zombie.
That John Galt may be telling the truth about himself. He may actually work for a company that expects salaried employees to be at their desks working every minute of their waking hours. But that does not represent the real world. Medical residents and newby lawyers at major law firms may be expected to work stupidly long hours. But they settle back to regular hours after not too long. Even the stock market is only open from Monday through Friday 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. ET.
