Littlebigplanet

Post by xilly »

Is fucking amazing. Why was there not a thread about it? :(

This game really goes to show how far gaming has come as an art form. Everything in the game feels tangible. It's almost like you can actually feel the surfaces your guy is standing on, because by looking at it you can imagine exactly what that would look and feel like in real life. I am so impressed by it, not because it's ridiculously cute, but just because it's the first game that's really "wow'd" me in quite some time. I know I haven't taken a look this closely at a game since Katamari Damaci at least.

This game is good enough that I finished Fable II and have literally put Fallout 3 on hold to play. It's that good.

I have some friends that are obsessed with LBP. I'm not too into the customizing-puzzle-type games, but if you are, I'd definitely recommend it.

It's ok that you can't afford it. I won't hate you.

Personally, I love the ps3, but I had to buy a 360 cause I got tired of playing by myself.

And, Tax.. you don't have to create levels. It's just an option. The game has a story mode and you can play the custom created levels by members of the community.

Even on story mode, you can spend a lot of time customizing how your character looks. One of my friends loves those kinds of games, so he really gets into LBP. I would rather spend hours playing a game than customizing how my character looks, so it drives me crazy to play with him.

All I was saying was that if you like to spend time customizing everything about your avatar in a game, you'll probably like LBP.

Oh, and the PS3 is a major waste of money IMO. I'm very satisfied with my 360, though.

I'll buy a PS3 eventually, but not until the price drops and I'm ready to invest in Blu-ray.

You realize how ignorant that is, right? Xbox 360 pro with 60 gig hdd = 299.99. PS3 80 gig hdd = 499.99. PS3 wireless = Included, 360 wireless = 100$ adaptor. PS3 is a blu-ray player, 360 has no blu-ray player yet, but there is one in the works and it'll likely be 100-200$. Do you people just hate the ps3 because it's the internet trendy thing to do, or are you just anti-sony for making so expensive in the first place?

So what if I don't want WiFi in my console? Can I get $100 off my PS3 if I have ethernet available? Besides, who wants to game over WiFi - dropouts suck. Your statement on $100 is bullshit anyway - you don't have to use the fancy Microsoft one. There's plenty of third party WiFi to Ethernet adapters for sale for $30 or so.

"Hating the PS3" isn't just "trendy", it's a simple fact that Sony fucked up the price sweet-spot on a console and Microsoft didn't. The PS3 is an excellent Blu-Ray player though, assuming you care enough to go Blu-Ray and not just wait for the next format off the shelf. There's a reason the XBox is killing the PS3 sales all around the world and that's simply because it offers better value for the end user. There's simply not $200 more value in a PS3 over an XBox.

Do what I do, own both, seeing as how some games will never be translated to all consoles....

Dd: I was under the impression from the original thread way back when that the Blu-Ray wasn't real good on a PS3. Has there been a change?

I respectfully disagree. Sony may have "fucked up" the sweet spot with console pricing, but I also believe they intended to have the ps3 replace several other smaller devices. The PS3 has a memory stick reader built in so you can essentially skip the use of a computer by uploading the files from your flash memory to the ps3 hdd and then pull them off with a flash drive via the usb port. PS3 also has the ability to run linux distros if you don't have a computer, and it's a phenomenal dvd player with blu-ray to boot. I think the value is there for people who need/want more than just a gaming console, however, I can also understand people who just want a gaming console not jumping in. Side note: Fallakin's 399$ sale price is too good to pass up. I agree with partha. I own a ps3 and a 360, and I love them both.. but to rail the other system simply because you don't have one or "think it's a waste of money" is a bit unfair. I love my ps3, and I don't use half the stuff it's capable of doing.. but the deal closer for me is that the ps3 has built in wireless (for streaming media mainly) and having peripherals that run on bluetooth rather than wireless is a big plus to me. Plus, the ps3 can host 7 controllers, as opposed to the xbox hosting a max of 4. :p

I personally, however, abhor the Nintendo Wii. But, I also owned one for over a year before I decided it was garbage and traded it in for my 360. :P

Since the later firmware upgrades, my reading is that the PS3 is one of the better quality Blu-Ray players out there.

Personally I own a PS2 so don't really have a stake in either console. I think I get much better value for money from my PC though, especially given it kicks either console's ass. ;)

They absolutely did intend that, but that was really what killed them. They'd put too much "stuff" into the box that they couldn't price it in the sweet range even when eating massive loss-leaders on the boxes. Hell - the X360 has been outselling the PS3 in *Japan* lately which really says a lot on the pricing models and/or game libraries.

Honestly - both systems have plusses and minuses. My take on the PS3 is:

Pro: Lots in the default package. Marginally more powerful on paper. Blu-Ray.
Con: High price and can't strip options to lower it. Smaller game library. Harder to develop for.

If I had to choose one of X360 or PS3, I'd say go with the X360 *unless* you cared about having a Blu-Ray player and didn't mind the smaller game library.

Well, two things: One, I agree that the Cell processor is harder to program for.. but I've also heard that Sony has given developers a much more intuitive toolkit to work with. I, obviously, can't say yea or nay on that, but it's something I've read. Two, the 360 also had a little better than a year head start on the ps3 and from what I understand is coded a lot like the original xbox was, so there wasn't too much transition going from the old platform to the new one.

Sony is bringing down the prices because I think, like you mentioned, that people don't really want all those options. They're taking off 2 of the USB ports and they're removing other optional things in order to bring the price down lower as well.

As far as sales go in Japan.. it's not really fair to include them, as the Japanese will literally buy a console because of one title. From what I have heard, the major reason for the boost of sales is Tales of Vesperia. People are obsessed with the tales series in Japan.

Honestly I think the only thing the Xbox360 has on the PS3 is that it has been out for 1 year longer. This means the AAA exclusive titles are more prevalent (GoW, GoW2, and Halo3). And it is those games or games that have different features that I look at when viewing my game library.

I will say that PS3 is catching up. With Resistance 2, Naruto Ninja Storm, and Valkyria Chronicles the numbers are evening out. I definitely think that the power is equitable right now in graphics performance as evident from the Call of Duty 4 and GoW2/Killzone2 graphics, but I think it is fair to say that PS3 is harder to program for now with the longer delays in game releases. Killzone 2 is 2009 now and MGS4 was pushed back at least 3-6 months.

That said the hardware for the PS3 is better quality. I just had to replace my Xbox360 because the cd drive failed on it after avoiding the ring of death.

The development environment for the 360 is leaps and bounds ahead of the environment for the PS3. Sony and Nintendo have both always provided lackluster development tools and developers have either learned to suffer with them or gone to third-party alternatives. Unfortunately there aren't many alternatives at this point.

The 360 is much more similar to a PC as far as programming for it goes. It is more complex than the original XBox but not nearly as different as the PS3 is. The big difference is that you can port any old PC code to the 360 very easily and it will run ok where the PS3 is not as forgiving.

The original XBox was much easier to program for than the PS2 as well. If they had come out at the same time you would have seen better Xbox games than PS2 games initially and then as developers learned more things would even out again.

Current generation console hardware differences aside, it all boils down to the games and there are not *any* exclusive titles for the PS3 that have convinced me to purchase the system. FWIW, I've been a consistent Sony gamer for years (PS1, PS2, PSP, etc.) until the PS3 came out. And I'm not saying there aren't solid games available (there are), but there are not enough to make me feel justified in spending $500+ for a few games and a system. LBP, for instance, seems like a great game, but I'll need to see several more outstanding exclusive titles (that I can't play on my 360 or PC) before I consider picking up a PS3.

Although I have a great home theater setup, I don't plan to buy a blu-ray player unless/until the price drops much lower. Until then, I'll just have to settle with watching high-def Netflix movies on my big screen through my 360. :drunken:
