Scariest Movies
What are some of the scariest movies you've ever seen?
I freak out at the idea that someone can see me when I can't see them. I can't sleep unless all the windows in my place are completely covered up. That being said, the movies that have freaked me out the most were The Descent and The Strangers.

Hard to say really as there are many differnet types of movies that can accomplish the same goal.......gore.....implied effect.......shock.....etc.
Probably a toss up for me between The Exorcist and Hellraiser.

I'm talking about hands down scariest. If gore scares you, then post some of those.Kulaf wrote:Hard to say really as there are many differnet types of movies that can accomplish the same goal.......gore.....implied effect.......shock.....etc.
Hellraiser 1 or the whole series?Kulaf wrote:Probably a toss up for me between The Exorcist and Hellraiser.

Re: Scariest Movies
I'm probably going to get teased for this one, but the Blair Witch Project really did scare the hell out of me.

Exorcist, hands down.
Correction Mr. President, I DID build this, and please give Lurker a hug, we wouldn't want to damage his self-esteem.

Some old crappy 70s or 80s movie where the island is invaded by millions upon billions of tarantulas. Then again I really don't like spiders.
All others are just funny, they may startle me but never scare me.

Just the first one. The rest were a joke.Taxious wrote:I'm talking about hands down scariest. If gore scares you, then post some of those.Kulaf wrote:Hard to say really as there are many differnet types of movies that can accomplish the same goal.......gore.....implied effect.......shock.....etc.

And actuall one movie that scared me a lot was Southern Comfort. I was right after I had signed up for Selective Service and everyone thought Reagan was going to get us into a war. It was just the timing.....nothing super scarry about Southern Comfort.....but when you think "hey, that could be me"......it gets a bit more tense.
For sheer cringe worthyness, Alien probably made me not look at the screen more than any other movie I had seen. I absolutly HATE movies where shit jumps out at you on screen (shock). I usually never go to shock movies.

Arachnophobia. Can't stand spiders either.
Horror I'm either amused, bored or just sickened.

I forgot about Arachnophobia, but that earlier movie already did the damage so I knew that Arachnophobia would not be good for me.

Exorcist
Hellraiser wasn't really scary to me in the same sense, but it was fucking awesome crazy cool (and unlike anything I'd ever see in a horror movie.)
The Prince of Darkness always scared me.
The Shining is up there.
Ghost Story was another one.
The Changeling was creepy to me as a kid, and I still enjoy it now.
Alien was scary the first movie, but after that you kind of knew the formula (though Aiens was awesome, just not as scary.)
The Thing (Kurt Russell)
Invasion of the Body Snatchers
I enjoyed the Ring, too.
I'm not into stuff like Halloween, Freddy, Friday the 13th as "Scary movies. " To me, those are "startle me" kind of movies--not the same as really being freaked out/afraid.

Re: Scariest Movies
I'm with Klast - The Blair Witch Project. I saw it before it went into general theatrical release on opening night in a really old theater (Uptown). I had seen the website and really got into those, the whole documentary feel of it. So when I saw it, people didn't know shit about it or the ending. So it was fucking scary. It really was the beginning of awesome viral marketing.
After it went into wide release and people started making fun of various aspects, well of course it's not scary then, but at the time, it was a great, creepy, realistic scare.
Other than that The Exorcist, The Descent and Hellraiser were all pretty fucking scary. I thought the Exorcism of Emily Rose was as well, but demon-possession shit always scares me.

The Descent was hella scary. NOT what I expected. I thought it would be the "oh noes, we lost oxygen and hallucinated it all," yeah... so not the case.

Re: Scariest Movies
I saw The Exorcist when I was about 12 at a birthday party, even then I wasn't too terribly afraid. I mean it was creepy yeah, but I've never been into the whole horror or gore genre. Nothing like that has really ever bothered me IRL either though, I mean i've been disturbed, but never saw anything that scared the shit out of me, or made me want to puke.
The Ring, the Japanese version however was the scariest thing I've seen all things considered.

Re: Scariest Movies
"It" was the last movie to really scare the shit out of me. But I was 8 at the time and it's a movie about psychotic child killing clown. Plus, I fucking hate clowns.

Well ya gotta kinda remember that The Exorcist came out in 1973. I'm not sure how old you were when you saw it but I am guessing it was pretty dated by then. Also not sure if you saw the "TV version" or had rented it.Ariannda Kusanagi wrote:I saw The Exorcist when I was about 12 at a birthday party, even then I wasn't too terribly afraid. I was too young in 73 to see it but I did catch it in 82 at college.

Re: Scariest Movies
The Exorcist still scares the shit out of me. I actually consider it better than most of the crap out now. It's still unique in so many ways.
I think what scares me about it is that I've read a whole lot of stuff about demonology and possession and whether or not that stuff is true, it's frightening to me. Coast to Coast used to have Father Malachi Martin on (a priest who had performed exorcisms,) and the stories he told were enough to keep you up at all hours of the night, jumping at every little noise.
On the Blair Witch. It was really scary, imho. I was stupid, though, and sat too close to the scree in the theater. Both my friend and I walked out and almost horked up because of the camera shaking so much. That's my only issue with it. But, yeah, scary. I haven't seen the second one. No idea if it's any good.

Re: Scariest Movies
If we are counting things that scared us as children then I'll throw in Fantasia. I saw it when I was 4. Most of the movie is cute cartoons, but the Night on Bald Mountain http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V8Ca_edg6RE The demon, the ghosts and all the monsters, the throwing creatures in to the volcano. It all gave me nightmares for weeks. I would wake up screaming.
