Say a small prayer for N.O.

Post by Partha »

They aren't even close to ready for another one.
Instead of an airplane, it's a floodwall, and instead of a Band-Aid, the witness says two years ago, he saw the contractor filling the expansion joint or opening between the floodwalls with newspaper.

“The whole length of the wall was stuffed with newspaper.”

And when he confronted the contractor, the contractor blamed Washington for the substandard work.

“He basically told me when Congress sent down the money, it would be repaired the proper way.”

But during a recent trip to the area, two years later, it was apparent that didn't happen. Much of the newspaper had deteriorated or been eaten by bugs, but some still remained. In fact WWL cameras even captured the date May 21, 2006, on a page of the Parade magazine from the Times-Picayune.
Tell me that one again about how private industry does so much of a better job than government at building infrastructure. But I guess Congress never sent the money, what with ERCON only getting a little over $10m in 2007 for that newspaper.

There are always shitbirds in every segment of the population... private companies included. If the contractor did do what you indicated, and it is the full scope of the story, then I hope the contractor serves a long and arduous jail term.

Common Sense would dictate that building below sea level would be a bad idea when you're that close to the sea.

Why those retards don't understand that, I'll never understand.

You realize that parts of the city are well above sea level, correct?

Then build the entire city above sea level, its not that hard to understand that building below sea level in an area that has the potential to be hit by hurricanes is a bad idea.

What does that have to do with the parts built well below sea level? Are you supporting the redirection of more tax payer dollars to rebuilding a city below sea level?

People should be banned from rebuilding in flood plains. If they can ban lawn darts they can ban that as well.
Maybe if it was my house I would feel differently. I can understand the desire to put your life back together the way it was. To rebuild your house right where it was.

It might be more productive to say a small prayer for people who do not learn from experience.

It's a self-correcting problem if we don't keep bailing out people who do stupid shit. I think cutting of insurance for those places is a good start. No insurance, no mortgage. No mortgage, no house.

New Orleans got helped once. That's enough. Now its on them.

Umm people do get banned for building in floodplains. Since all flood insurance is from the federal government if there are numerous claims on the same location the government will revoke the flood insurance on those residences in flood plains that have been lost too many times. If the owner rebuilds at that location they they can not file a claim on flood insurance when they lose it and they are out of pocket any money to rebuild.

Besides why waste good farmland with buildings.

maybe they could actually finish the projects that were started decades ago, and keep the affected areas condemned until the work is complete?
Or write the whole place off and leave.

the problem with just packing up and leaving is that new orleans is a very important port for the united states. what they really should do is build nothing but hurricane proof structions on even ground above sea level and use it to house the industries workers and every one who is not a port worker or support personel should move up river and live there.

and saying a prayer is a great way to cop out instead of actually doing something to help.

As long as there is a Port of New Orleans, there will be a New Orleans, and Republicans need to deal with that reality.

New Orleans being in a flood plain has nothing to do with Republicans or Democrats. Everyone needs to deal with the reality that as long as its profitable for there to be a port there, then there will be a New Orleans.

Why don't we, as a nation, learn from say ...the Netherlands on this whole how-to-protect-shit-that's-below-sea-level business.

Because hurricanes don't go to the Netherlands.

And? They have better methods of dealing with flooding than we do and we DO have hurricanes.
