Idle Question

Re: Idle Question
I own one mortgage...
Though, if I had a million or 4-5 like these politicians do, I might have a beach house someplace. Maybe I should run for office?
...c'mon, you'd vote for me, wouldn't you Partha?
In all seriousness though, I don't care how many houses "rich" people have. I wish they'd just stop with this nearly "e-peen" style crap and just tell us how they actually plan to run the nation. Something I find ironical is both candidates are proposing change once they become President. A lot of change hasn't been voted on by either of them in Congress since they started running.

Re: Idle Question
You realize, of course, that very little substantive can get through in a divided Congress/WH, right?
And, of course, you could actually go LOOK UP WHAT THEY PLAN TO DO without waiting for the Teevee Soundbite that don't inform you anyways, right?

Re: Idle Question
Sure I can. Just too bad both of them change their opinion with their underwear...
I'd rather see how they vote while they're still in Congress. There have been several bills dealing major economic concerns and energy independence. Neither of them placed a vote.
As for the divided Congress and White House...at least there's still the option for Congress to override vetoes. I know, effort and takes time, but...

Re: Idle Question
0 and if I owned more then 2, or 3, or 4 or my spouse did I'd like to think I'd at least have a better idea then "well I'm not sure i'll have to have someone else find out and let you know"
McCain ... everytime he opens his mouth lately I wanna poke him in the head and say "DUH" but I'm afraid then his head would cave in and Obama would win by default.

I thought it was his wife that was the rich one. Maybe they're really hers? And she lets him stay over sometimes when she's feeling generous (and when he doesn't call her a c**t.)

Re: Idle Question
I own zero. Probably going to be a renter most of my life until I am ready to buy a condo. Outdoor maintenance is not something I enjoy.
But on the topic......my friends own 2 houses and a 6plex of apartments. But they are hardly "rich". They just invest wisely in real estate.

Re: Idle Question
I own 1 and have half of it paid for. My goal was to have it paid off in 10 years rather than 15 or 30.
One of my girlfriends has over a dozen, but they are in really depressed areas - so one very nice house she lives in and the rest are rentals. She's an interesting chick - a swimsuit model and slumlord. She and her husband buy up foreclosed rental properties (usually in the $50-$60k range) bring them up to code (replace all the copper that was stolen after people were booted) and then rent them out to section 8 people. They have 13 and are shooting for 23 before he quits his job surveying to just manage their properties. They are out house hunting every single week and are now buying at least one home a month.
I wouldn't want to deal with all the drama they deal with though.

Re: Idle Question
1 house - Everyone calls it a "McMansion". I had made a tentative offer (which was tentatively accepted) on a real mansion (8000 sq. ft. versus 4000 in this house), but we were all at lunch with our real estate agent, I went to take a leak, and when I came back the wife was crying "It's not a home - I want a home". So we bought the house I live in now instead.
In retrospect I'm glad I didn't buy something massively huge. This one is probably too much house for us. Honestly the dream of a fancy house didn't include walking up and down stairs all day, 3 vacuum cleaners, 2 steam cleaners, and 100 or so lightbulbs, 2 of which seem to burn out every day. It seems like no matter what I do, I can't seem to have more than about half of it clean at any given time, and that's not counting the landscaping, which my life seems to involuntarily revolve around. Not only that, but people treat me differently, and I don't like it. Once my daughter's date parked around the corner because he was ashamed of parking his beater car on my block, and I don't relate to any of my neighbors (4 doctors, 1 prominent attorney, 1 federal judge and 1 retired TV producer). I liked it better when my neighbors were plumbers.
We sold our house in southern california at the tippy top of the market, and at the time my sister called me stupid for not using the money to finance 10 houses. She owns 4 houses in Portland and she's a heart attack waiting to happen. I have to go there next week to be her handyman for a few weeks because her health has deteriorated and she'll be bed-ridden, so I'm certainly glad I don't own more than one house.
As soon as the market picks up I'm selling this beast and buying a nice, cozy, modest house somewhere and intend to have only 1 vaccum cleaner and no mortgage.
Here's the object of our mixed blessings:

Re: Idle Question
It's a lovely house Freecare and but I'm not sure it qualifies as a mansion. I think my parents house was around 4000 sq (however it also had a furnished basement) when I was growing up and I loved the house. There were only 4 of us but it was big enough to keep my sister and I at bay in our own rooms but not so big that we got lost. The neighborhood was upper middle class and it was a brand new subdivision on a golf course (we lived on Fairway Drive) with mostly professional neighbors (again though my dad was a doctor). However my mom was a stay at home mom and every other week a cleaning lady came in to help, although I'd hardly have called Linda part of the help or any such thing. Yes there were the lightbulbs and the upstairs, downstairs and basement vacuums, but the kids were required to care for and clean their areas which I'm sure helped.
I looked at a gorgeous old Victorian several bedrooms, a library, 8 fireplaces, a pool and a small "cottage"that's around 5300 sq. at a price of 189k. the problem is i'm sure it needs massive upgrades and repairs but it would be the kind of house your kids (all 4 of them) came home to Christmas with their families, with a huge christmas tree and the whole christmas card scene. It's not a reality but the house would be a home.
I want one house, but like Freecares wife I want a home.

Except for the reflection in the upstairs window that looks like a giant devil cat staring out onto the street, lovely house.
