That's pretty damn cunning really. Of course, if your machine has sensitive enough information on it then it should never have a direct line to the internet anyway, but still... cunning!

Aw wtf.
My hard drive is a Seagate... and I recently found a Trojan when uploading a ton of data. Prolly not related since it's a smaller drive and not one of the ones reported, but lol coincidence.

I've never seen a new hard drive come prepartitioned and formatted. I'd be suspicious of any drive that was. I'm mildly surprised that there hasn't been a fuss over the potential to compromise device firmware. Imagine a spy drive able to reinfect itself at will after being formatted. Or worse, a drive that could potentially take control of a system simply by being connected.
