Across the Universe
Being a Beatles superfan, I thought the idea of the movie was great. I liked Jude and Max, didn't care for Lucy. I liked Prudence in the beginning.
I thought the movie would've been better off if they stuck to the visualizations (like the recruiting office, or Eddie Izzard's segment).
Some parts played like a very well done Rock Opera.
Most of the movie was closeups on peoples faces with them playing Kareoke to Beatles songs. All around, I felt as if I were watching "Rent" as opposed to what I had in my mind -- as I waited every second since the pre-production press release of it's filming.

I'm excited to see this when it comes out on video. I wasn't willing to drop the cash to see it in the theaters but I do love me my Beatles.

I too consider myself a Beatles' superfan... but I wasn't looking forward to this movie at all. It looked horribly done and after the fiasco that was Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band by the Beegees, I kind of knew it was going to suck.

Sgt. Pepper's by the BeeGee's is classic! WTF, Walrus? It's like a super-concert with acting and stage drama!

Re: Across the Universe
Sgt Peppers movie is on On Demand but i haven't watched it yet, however ever since seeing the preview for Across the Universe i have been dying to see it. Unfortunatly in every preview i saw it never told a release date so i thought it was already on video (i didn't have tv for quite awhile). I was sad to know it wasn't coming out in theaters for awhile. I may be dropping the cash to go see it in theaters.

Re: Across the Universe
We finally got around to watching this last night. Best film released in 2007, hands down. The acting was great and the story was exceptionally creative and entertaining. I have to give a lot of credit to the director, Julie Taymor. The unique way this film was put together was most excellent. A few highlights include great acting by Jude and Max, as Garr mentioned, as well as noteable performances from Bono, Joe Cocker and Eddie Izzard. Overall, this was one of the best modern day musicals I have seen.

I'm not much of a beatles fan, at all.. but I did enjoy Sgt. Pepper's. Is this one worth checking out just as a movie or do you have to be a big beatles fan to enjoy it?

It's just a great film. If you had never heard the Beatles before you'd still like it. Unless, of course, you hate musicals.

Musicals aren't real movies and can't ever be considered "best movies" 2007's best movie was No Country for Old Men.

Re: Across the Universe
I really don't like musicals at all and this is no exception (Sweeney Todd & Moulin Rouge are a couple of exceptions). I do think it was better than Hairspray, which I really hated (even though John Travolta was amusing as the mom).
I just thought the story and acting were pretty cheesy and weak and didn't do the songs justice.

Lip-syncing a soundtrack really isn't great acting to me anyway. Especially with there being so many close-ups. Re: Across the Universe
All the actors sang their parts in a studio. Overdubs on a film like this is common. Chicago, Sweeny Todd, The Doors, Hairspray, etc... all the same. It's not like some other person sang their parts.

Re: Across the Universe
Like I said, their lip-syncing performances really didn't do it for me - and their voices didn't do the songs justice. It was like watching the cast of "High School The Musical" try to do Led Zepplin or Pink Floyd.
As I said, I really don't care for musicals for the most part, but it is more impressive in person when people aren't lip-syncing.

I was pretty disappointed but I don't really know why. I was just expecting... more.
I liked "Let It Be" a lot though.

Pfft, most of you are doodoo head cootie queen lint-lickers. I LOVED this movie. I'm gonna buy it. It was so moving to me and the music kicked ass. Joe Cocker was the best imho, and second place was "Let it Be" gospel style. I also had a total girl-hard on for the lady who played Sadie. Helter Skelter never sounded so good.
The guy who played Max was awesome. Still have that song in my head...

Re: Across the Universe
Very mixed on this movie. I hate musicals. Thought this would have been a great story without the singing. In the same respect thought the music without the other shit was great. Yet somehow all together... seemed to eat dick.

just saw this last night. at first i was disappointed (i hate musicals) but as the movie progressed i found myself liking it. the Let It Be segment was extremely moving and the segment of I Want You/She's So Heavy was excellent also.
