I couldn't find a song I wanted online for a long time. It wasn't on Ares, LimeWire, youtube, myspace, or even Amazon. Finally I stumbled upon a site that had it, and for free.
I can't tell if I've jumped the gun in excitement about this site or not yet, but so far I've been able to find any song I've wanted and am able to download it - without paying, signing up for anything, or installing anything. Just right click the download link on any song and "save target as." Awesome.

A Maya crack from a friend from a supposed good site had a virus. It hid until you tried to render something. I was glad to have a decent AV program because it caught the damn thing right away.

What site are you using?

I've had a lot more problems with LimeWire than I ever have with Ares. I've never had or heard of any spyware coming along with Ares being installed. Neither have a ton of friends that use it...
Select, you shouldn't be too scared of "getting a virus." The worst that can happen is that your virus scan fails and you have to reinstall windows and transfer all of your files back over. Not that big of a deal...

Actually, the (most plausible) worst that can happen is you get a rootkit installed on your machine that subverts your virus scanner so you never actually know you've been hacked. Then random criminal elements use your machine as a jumping off point for hacking attempts against high profile targets such as the DoD, NSA, White House or Church of Scientology. Then men in black come in with a warrant, ask you all sorts of really tough questions and take your computer away as material evidence of the crime without your ever seeing it again or even having a chance to get anything from it.
