Ps3 to have $900 pricetag, delayed until 2007
Sleepy eyed, watching msnbc this morning, and they were talking about the Sony announcement that Ps3 will be delayed until late 2007 because of trouble with the Blueray dvd system, and because they are using Blueray, the price tag is going up, to get this, $900, ouch.....
Im still waiting for msnbc to post on their page the show this morning.

Sony's gotta be running a decent sweat over the PS3. A bunch of devs for the system are saying that although it has better specs on paper the reality is that it's only really equivalent or marginally better than the X360 when you actually code for it. That's especially true if you're developing for both PS3 and X360 and trying to use a similar codebase. Add that to the problems the next-gen DVD formats are facing and it's really adding some big risk to the whole thing.
It'll sell in Japan anyway I guess.

Ahh - $900 is the cost to make them, not the price tag. MSNBC was mixed up.
Sony will have to sell the PS3 at the same price point as the X360 and losing $500 per unit is pretty insane. I think MS is losing $200-$250 per unit which they will make up in game sales but Sony's really going to be biting hard at the higher loss leader.
I think 12 months delay is probably unrealistic. I could see them not being released in the US until Christmas though (which isn't such a bad timing anyway). If they miss Christmas, Microsoft wins hands down.

M$ was loosing $500 per machine on Xbox1 in the beginning, iirc...
Seems like a fair trade-off.

You don't remember correctly.Fallakin Kuvari wrote:M$ was loosing $500 per machine on Xbox1 in the beginning, iirc...

The exact statistics of MS's Xbox profits/loss were never made public (I'd love for someone to correct me), so regardless of what you've read/remember, it's probably not accurate.
Regardless, if those costs cited in the MSN article are accurate, Sony will have to charge a pretty penny for the hardware to avoid a substantial loss. It'll be interesting to: a) see when Sony finally ships the PS3 and b) see what they charge for it.
C'mon MS stock, daddy wants to retire young!
