I didn't know that the Founding Fathers were as pro-public education as they actually were, whether practical or not. For their time and as members of the aristocracy, their views were really very progressive on the subject. Although Jefferson didn't strictly support public education in the way we think of it today, to even support a system of making school available to everyone that could spare the time to attend was quite remarkable.

Most of what I said actually came from my wife being a complete Jane Austen nut and telling me a lot about the differences between the people of various scales of wealth at the time. In particular in this case, Emma deals a bit with the educational differences between the wealthy and the poor in her relationship with Harriet Smith.

I also completely agree with Jecks' point that to maintain a system of government you need the collective good will of the people within that system.
