Finally saw it. ZQ as Spock was the highlight for me.
Hidden Information!
When he told the Vulcan elders that he was joining Starfleet, then told them to "live long and prosper," I just loved the way he oooozed sarcasm. It was like a big F-you to all the pointy-ears. Nice!

Kirk was ok. I didn't think his character was really explored that much. He seemed to be there for eye candy and to be badass, but he was overshadowed by other characters like Spock, Scotty and Bones (whom I loved by the way.)

I liked Ohura. I like that they gave her a bit more sass and the relationship with Spock was refreshing.

I loved the nods to old and new Trek, especially what they did with Captain Pike. Him in a wheelchair at the end is an awesome nod to "The Menagerie," by far one of the best old Trek episodes out there. And the comment about Captain Archer's beagle (Scott Bakula's Archer from "Enterprise") is pretty funny. Though I haven't watched Enterprise, I was familiar with the dog for whatever reason. Chances are, there were more references to TNG, DS9 and Voyager, but that will take some time hunting for when the DVD comes out.

I think the only thing that really disappointed me was Eric Bana as Nero. He just fell flat (as did all the Romulans.) I don't think the movie did them justice in terms of portraying their common ancestry with the Vulcans (The Romulans having embraced their violent/savage ways and the Vulcans having risen above that.) They all were just like big, stupid thugs, imho. I wasn't impressed by Nero in any way, shape or form.

Liked the familiar faces--even Winona Ryder as Spock's mom. Especially loved seeing Cameron from House as Kirk's mom. I read an interview with her somewhere in which she stated that she would be playing Momma Kirk and that it was quite a remarkable role.

Fixed. Now the thread is even more nitpicky.

Most believable piece of physics in Star Trek yet. Save the scorn for the Red Matter, it was particularly bad, and escaping from beyond the event horizon of a black hole.

Saw it, was satsified for what I expected. Didn't expect anything worthy of Shakespeare, though.

Yeah, I was iffy about that one. Obviously I know jack shit about physics other than the basics that everyone should know, but something about the shockwave seemed wrong to me. It was after that post that I realized that there would have been more than enough time for Romulus to evacuate given the exploding star would have been at least a couple light years away, and the shockwave would have been traveling at sub-light speed.

The iffy bit is the outright destruction of the planet... At first mention, I assumed it just wiped the surface clean of life - which is a plausible thing for the nearby supernova of a moderately large star to do. (Say, 2 light years and 3-5 solar masses.) To project a hot, turbulent shell of planet-wrecking destruction across those two light years though, would take a star like Betelgeuse going up, and even then, it probably won't do it.

I assume Romulus had a relatively short time - 2-3 years, and poor planning decisions were made (or not made at all!). Whatever.

Trek is like watching a fantasy movie, rather than hard sci-fi, imo. Take it like that, and I'm just fine with it, bad physics and all. It wasn't frigging Star Trek V.

I agree. It's just fantasy, enjoy the ride. It was pretty clear from the previews and knowing JJ Abrams involvement, that it was going to be candy, not meat.

Which is, of course, the core of my complaint.

I think we are beyond the hiding stage in the thread so not going to bother. I think the Romulans on that ship were portrayed fairly accurately. They were after all just planetary miners.....and that was a mining ship. They were not Romulan military.

They were still kind of lame and lacked any dimension whatsoever.

Eric Bana was just embarrassing, imho. WTF?

Eric Bana has always been a shitty, stiff actor imo.

He was awesome on Full Frontal, but I doubt that ever made it to the US.

It wasn't till I was reading something on line that I found out those little holes in is head were scars from having his head bitten. Apparently the part of the movie that explained that got left on the cutting room floor.

I hope so.. I love Eric Bana! I'm totally looking this up when I get home, thanks Dd.

Well, if he's actually the one doing the full frontal in the movie, I might have to look at it myself. Lemme know what you find out, Tax. :)

Was it just me or was there an incredible lack of defense around Vulcan and Earth?

I mean, sure, the Romulan mining ship was "higher tech", but all it did was fire those cluster missile things at whatever it was pointed at. I never saw any other offensive attacks, it obviously had no real defenses around the dangly drill. I recall the "finding the defense codes", but hell, that drill had to be going for like 10 minutes.

The drill was sabotaged by two guys shooting lasers at it from the outside at one point. You mean to tell me an entire planet can't muster a few little ships to blow the crap out of a precariously dangling laser drill that's quite obviously a weapon of some sort?
