http://www.acs.org Will give you some insight into the colleges.. If you go into chemistry or biochem, make sure your university is accredited.
http://www.fastweb.com will let you fill out some forms with your specs and will send scholarship things to your email for your review. We're looking at studying overseas for 2 semesters to a year and there are actually tons of scholarships and loans for people studying abroad.
Also for studying abroad, find the college you want to go to in the UK and then find their sister colleges here in the US. Go to that college for a year or so then join up with their study abroad programs, you'll get more exposure and in a lot of cases pay less tuition if you go through a University program.
Let me know if you need any more info.

I can understand doing that to a peer or a potential employer, but why bother to some 17 year-old punk? That's just me, maybe I'm crazy or otherwise unfit for the evils of modern society. Hell, I know I tell what I think's the truth about my school whenever I'm asked. Guess my point was: It's kinda silly to put all your bets on one information source.Ickhor wrote: Some of them are probably honest but alot of the alumni i talked to seemed to talk extra good about their program for reasons of self-promotion.
...
Of course, when I read the thread title the first time, my thought was: Fuck, a(nother) brell ranter living off mah SS tax dollars! Maybe I am crazy.

Sounds like someone dropped out of premed ~Organic chemistry sucks ass ~
I really want to go out of state. Yknow, get really far away from my family for a while, and stuff.
Thanks for the websites laylee, i'll check those out.
How does the University accredation thing work? Are most universities accredited?

The ACS will tell you what schools are accredited:
http://center.acs.org/applications/cpt/ ... search.cfm
If that url doesn't work, go to http://www.chemistry.org and click on the "Educators & Students" tab. Then scroll down to the "college and graduate" section. Then click on "ACS-Approved Chemistry Programs" then click "Begin search" and it will let you search for accredited colleges by state.

Organic chem = Very interesting, but way, way nasty -- you will very quickly discover if your brain thinks in organic chemistry or not. If not first you will know pain then you will know fear and then your brain will crawl off wincing into a corner and you will pick a new major. If your brain can parse it then it will just be a hardcore course. My brain parses physics and math well, and I can "see" some organic chemistry, however, not enough that I wanted to keep on with Chem. Good luck.

Its the combination of the visualization, the geometry, and understanding exactly what configurations are thermodynamicly favored and why. And also what configuration the reactions occur in. I was good at HS chem, A's all the way, but my brain did not like organic chem -- I could do it, but it was way more work than it was worth. Its not the rules that were hard it is the exceptions and the visualizations of exactly how the bonds are attacked. Work on your chemical models and learn to visualize everyting -- its not impossible to do just a big hill that is hard to climb for some people. My visualization skills just did not work very well that way.

Just wait till you have to take P-Chem, (Particle), man that's gonna suck. Good luck on the hunting though. Do you also have planned what you'll be doing after undergrad? i.e. try and go into the work force or do the Master's and then even PhD?

I'll be depending mostly on savings and scholarships. I got like $12,000 from an old lawsuit, as well as anything I can save by working. A lot of it is finding scholarships, though.
No idea what i'll be doing after undergraduate. Having a "doctor" in front of my name sounds like hot shit though.

I strongly recommend A Ph.D. Is Not Enough: A Guide to Survival in Science to anyone considering a career in science.
Oh, and the ACS' twin responsibilities are to promote itself, and promote chemistry. Take them with a grain of salt. Learn what "degree inflation" means, and look up actual employment figures and salary surveys if you want a real career someday.
