Ok here is the premiss of the story. The Humans have discovered this ultra rare mineral that sells for like $2mil/gram or something on the planet of Pandora (an earth like planet orbiting a gas giant). The problem is that the larget deposit of the mineral is sitting under the home of the native people (the Na'vi) so the humans want to "relocate" them. To facilitate a "diplomatic" solution the humans have mixed human and Na'vi DNA to create what amounts to hybrid clones that have no inteligence but can be receptacles for human control. They are like organic robots. A Marine's twin brother is killed and since he was one of the PHD's who was matched to a robot, the government/military want him to take his brothers place. He is a parapalegic and looking for a way to get his legs working again so he agrees. His mission for the doctors is of a bodyguard for them as they go out into the jungle, but his is also working under orders from the government to infiltrate the Na'vi and get useful intel that the military can exploit should a diplomatic solution be unfeasible. Jake (the Marine) gets seperated from his landing party while in Na'vi robo form and is going to be killed by a pack of doglike creatures when he is saved by a female Na'vi. While they are interacting the gaia force gives her a "sign" that he is destined for some purpose so she takes him to see her mother and father who are the head priestess and tribal leader repectively. He is granted permission to learn the ways of the Na'vi so he can help them better understand humans in the process.
That is the basic premiss of the story and here I will stop to not spoil it any further.

Re: Avatar
Well, he is granted permission to learn their ways because of the "sign" from Gaia. They don't actually know that he's a human behind the avatar at first. That's why he has to "wake up" from the avatar form and report back to the humans while all the natives are sleeping.Kulaf wrote:He is granted permission to learn the ways of the Na'vi so he can help them better understand humans in the process.
Oh and this part is about 90% of the movie.

Well they knew they weren't actually Na'vi because they mentioned their smell and called them Dreamwalkers or Sleepwalkers...something like that.

Re: Avatar
Yeah she initially goes to shoot him because they know they aren't real Na'vi. The movie really has nothing to do with the natives getting to know the humans though. As I understood it, the Na'vi didn't even know about humans = avatars until the end.

Re: Avatar
No they are quite aware that Segorney Weaver's character is a human because she ran a shcool teaching the Na'vi english while in her Na'vi form. I was trying to be sort of subtle about the "know" phrasing but ok here goes. The Na've "see" each others spirit. They do not "see" the humans because the humans are so out of touch with nature. Hence all of the "I see you" comments in the movie. None of the other humans were warriors......they were all doctors. They could never pass any of the rituals of the Na'vi to gain any kind of standing so the Na'vi could never "see"/know them.Taxious wrote:Yeah she initially goes to shoot him because they know they aren't real Na'vi. A warrior is necessary for that? Or is that a human warrior supposedly more in touch with nature than a doctor?None of the other humans were warriors......they were all doctors.
Eh, there's more to the story. Doesn't he become the biggest baddest warrior of them all?

... ... ...
The scientists were, it was implied, given the opportunity to learn. The Na'vi found them unteachable, not because they were not warriors, but because what they wanted to learn was not what the Na'vi wanted to teach. The scientists were there to take data, make their own hypotheses, and to teach the Navi to be human. Jake, having no initial agenda, was willing to learn. There was a scene about this in the movie.

Hey Fall,
STFU and go see this. I think you might enjoy it even if it's flawed.

He becomes Ma Toruk or something like that of which there has only been 5 in all Na'vi legend. Which basically means that a Toruk has accepted him as a rider.Select wrote:A warrior is necessary for that? I'll still watch it once it hits Netflix or HBO, but I refuse to pay to see it in the theater.

I dislike that I'm agreeing with Fal, but yeah, not seeing it, either.
"He becomes Ma Toruk or something like that of which there has only been 5 in all Na'vi legend. Which basically means that a Toruk has accepted him as a rider."
This is a very rough quote of what I've read in response to the above, but I find it amusing:
"Big bad white man is suddenly thrust into a native culture, where he becomes the biggest and baddest of all and shows those natives how their culture should be done."

Well the last part is more "shows those natives how to fight against human technology"Select wrote:"Big bad white man is suddenly thrust into a native culture, where he becomes the biggest and baddest of all and shows those natives how their culture should be done."
Why are you two so anti seeing this movie in theaters? It seems like you would like a lot of the artsy visual effects Select. Not sure what's there for you though, Fal.
