Re: Punished For Not Driving
I realize I fucked up for not replacing my stickers in time, but it still seems a little weird that they can get you for outdated tickets on a parked car. What if I wasn't planning on driving it for a while? I didn't realize a car had to be registered to be parked on the street....

If they can see you have expired tags on your vehicle, without entering your property (IE visible from the street), you can get a ticket. All cars have to be registered. You can get away without registering a car if you have it covered and on your property, because they can't legally view the license plate without entering your property (however it's still illegal to not have the registration up to date).

If you have a license plate on the vehicle, the registration has to be up to date. It's illegal to retain the license plate if you haven't paid registration.

Re: Punished For Not Driving
Jeez Tax.
I had my plates expire, and I was thinking of not renewing them, and the day after they expired the DMV came and TOOK the back plate off my car (i'm supposed to have a front plate, but I bought my car in Delaware, they don't have front tags, the car was first owned in PA where they also don't have front tags, so my tag sits in the windshield while it's technically supposed to be in a front license plate holder but they couldn't enter the vehicle, and what good did the front tag do them anyway, it's the back tag that matters). They weren't very nice about it either. Apparently they came and collected several peoples plates in the middle of the night (seriously) and left everyone's rear license plate holders just laying on the ground somewhere near their car.... ok so they took my tags, how was i supposed to get TO the DMV to even get new tags ? The DMV is the next street over from me, so i would certainly have chanced the drive on expired tags, but not without tags heh.
I didn't know they could come to my house and snatch the tags off my car. Granted I live in an apartment complex and it's parked in the parking lot, but they must have had a list, because they wouldn't have just come in the middle of the night and looked at everyone's tags I don't think.
As a side note there's a car parked in the parking lot that hasn't been moved in at least 3 months, which makes me want to complain and have it towed as it's in prime parking space. There's plenty of other places it can be parked if it's not being used for awhile and it shouldn't be taking up a spot right in front of the building imo. Likewise we have some handicapped spaces that someone likes to park in and sit in for a day or so at a time, with no handicapped tag of placard. People also like to pull into the side parking lot and park their cars blocking everyone into their spaces. I normally don't mind as on occasion I do the same thing, but i never turn the car off as i only do this when i've forgotten something and am literally running inside, grabbing it and coming back out, but these people like to go in and visit their friends for awhile and block me in =(

Re: Punished For Not Driving
The Denver parking po-po doesn't fuck around, apparently. They just started street sweeping up again this month and while biking to work this morning I saw some guy screaming about there being a sticker and a boot on his car.Ddrak wrote:If you have a license plate on the vehicle, the registration has to be up to date. Street sweeping drives me fucking crazy too. I like the idea of keeping the streets clean, but the city just implements it to make money. I've lived in the same area for 3+ years now and I've never seen the street-sweeping side of the street clear of cars. Rather, it's a line of parked cars, each with a ticket, and the street sweeper goes down the middle of the street. BS!

Is there a sign with day and times for the cleaner? We have super obvious signs here and people still fuck it up. That's when I think a ticket is well deserved.

Re: Punished For Not Driving
Yes there are obvious signs, but that's not really the point. The point is that the streets are still completely full on street-sweeping days and nothing is accomplished except that the city makes a bunch of money and only the middle of the street gets cleaned. This happens 9/12 months of the year, and at $30/ticket, I'm sure they are making a killing. The process is in place so that they can ticket people, not clean the side of the street.Select wrote:Is there a sign with day and times for the cleaner? I'm actually very good at moving my car around each month to accommodate for SSing. I'm too much of a jew to get caught on stuff like this.

What? The streets are full because people are ignoring the signs. The city makes a killing, yea, but the charges are the fault of the people for not paying attention. If the signs are obvious, then what's the legit excuse? It's also the fault of the people that the streets aren't getting clean because the sweeper can't even get to the street to clean it. Either way, it works out for the city, it just depends on the people which way that's going to work out. It sounds like you have morons on your street who don't mind taking the hit or are too lazy/stupid to move. I wouldn't hate on the city for setting up a formula that works for them either way.The process is in place so that they can ticket people, not clean the side of the street.

In downtown Denver, street sweeping isn't serving its function of cleaning the streets. It doesn't really matter that the people parking on the streets are at fault, the system isn't working.

Re: Punished For Not Driving
It would work if the people would stop being at fault. They send a cleaner in and the only reason the sweeper can't clean the streets is because there are cars in the way, right? Or is there some other obstacle or a broken sweeper you didn't mention? The system works for the city no matter what happens, so they won't care how pissy you get. It's up to the people to make the system work for them.

Re: Punished For Not Driving
Would the city make as much money off of towing? They'd get a lot of tied up phone lines with "Wtf is my car". When the city tows here (not for sweep zones), they usually send you in circles, which wastes everyone's time.

That would work, the streets would get cleaned that way. Either way, something different needs to be done IMO.Ddrak wrote:Just change the law so you can tow people. Easy fix.

Select, GDI, the purpose of street sweeping is to clean the streets, not to make money. RIGHT????Select wrote:Would the city make as much money off of towing? Re: Punished For Not Driving
No. When you're a city, you try to make money any way you can. Lots of programs have dual purposes. That's also why there are penalties for freaking everything. If the people won't make it work for themselves by getting out of the way, then the city will use that as an opportunity to make money. Dual purpose for the city. One purpose for the people.

You'd have to pay to get your car out of city impound as well as a ticket, there's no way they'd be making less money.

Re: Punished For Not Driving
I go online to pay my ticket and notice that I have a second ticket on my account (one I never got on my car apparently?) for $100 (including late fees) that was issued last September.
