I think you maybe right.
Although in some species of dolphins and the bonobos, the act of non-procreative sex seems to be linked to strengthening the social group bond. Not so in humans. In humans, sex outside the pair-bond seems to always introduce strife into the pair-bond, and also the social circle the pair-bond exists in.
I can't think of any stable human social structure that condones extra pair-bond sexual relations as the norm.

Also a little known fact about humans. We are the only species on the planet that can go from talking about a movie, to penis size, to tri-squid battery fucking in 1 page.
Taxious you are fucked up in the head, you should realize this and try not to intentionally over expose yourself to more crazy shit. I remember asking myself when I was young "Wow the 'norm' today is crazy wild compared to what it was 50 years ago, but it seems to be at it's worst now. I mean how can you possibly top that crazy shit?" But I am not starting to realize I was wrong. You young idiots are going to blow my generations crazy out of the water.

While modern societies certainly have the pair bond issues you note, remember that, in antiquity, classic Rome, Greece, China, etc, sexuality was much more.. fluid than the rigid pair bonds that we have now. The most pronounced difference between ourselves and say, Dolphins and bonobos is the depth and flexibility of what can be called 'culture'. Functionally, our culture gives a series of learned and teachable behaviours that permit us, as small groups, as large groups, and as a species, to perform ultra-rapid adaptation to the current environment that no purely biological process can possibly match.Embar Angylwrath wrote:I think you maybe right.

We can see in microsocieties, the diffusion of the pair and family bonds, be it in Fundi-Mormon society and their many wives or in the old hippy communities. We see in antiquity concepts such as the homosexual military group-bond - especially in Greece, for example. So, biologically, the mechanism exists for extra-pair-bond sex. However, with the urbanization of mankind and the slow cultural specialization of humans, combined with the strengthening of economics in terms of the ability to provide for yourself and your progeny, it has become more desirable to latch to a partner with a high capability within their specalization, and thus their high economic reward... and to not let go. There are now factors besides physical health making a mate desirable. Thus, you end up with a significant, culturally taught, magnification of the jealous emotions, reinforced by the strong social network.

I don't think it's gotten any crazier, or that teenagers (or adults) are doing crazier shit now they didn't before - it's just easy to find it/hear about it since people display their lives online.

classic Rome
If I remember from history, it was the Etruscans who were more open with sex and who gave their women more power within society (Burying a wife in the tomb next to her husband as an equal) The Romans moved in to Etruscan territory and exaggerated the sex stories, demonizing them and eventually wiping out or censoring the remaining Etruscans who were then assimilated into Roman culture.
