Bah, well I wanted to play tonight but whenever I open the application I get the "could not connect to patch server" error. Port forwarding and all... /sigh

I pity anyone trying something like this on dial up. I hear the initial patching from DVD installation is on the order of 700mb.

My client still wont patch. I'm assuming that the servers are just clogged with everyone trying to download, but it's still hella annoying to not even see it start to download files.

Using release media -- you're facing probably about 900MB's of downloads, with a gig being max. Most of the patches are 13MB-35MB -- but there's a big one that's 621

And it just started patching right away? It sounds like a lot of people are having the same issue as me when I google it, but no one has an answer except "wait until the server becomes unclogged" /sigh

Yep! Started right up. I'm sorry to hear of your troubles, and those of others. I was actually bragging on the patching the other day. It always seems to patch quickly and reliably.

Did you do the whole pre-release or collectors edition thing?

The other thing I've been reading on this is that people that paid extra for the pre-release or collectors edition are never having problems with the patcher where nearly everyone that bought AoC retail isn't getting through. The theory sounds suspicious to me as I hope the company wouldn't be that greedy.

Absolutely no problems with patcher in retail version. Took 2+ hours for the 700+ mb download (100mb +621mb patches).

Only problems I saw was inability to get back to character select screen and directx10 being selectable but not working and suffering problems.

Ok, I did a reinstall and everything started magically working even though I put it in the same directory as before. The patching process only took 15 minutes which was a lot speedier than I expected.

Did you try a PvP server out? I heard it's brutal. People camping rez spots without penatly, etc.

Embar, how do you like healer? I think it's kinda gimp that I'm the "main" healing class and I only have one heal and it can only be used once a minute. I guess I expected more of the "cleric/druid/shaman" relationship.

I'm level 18 I think, and I play the same class (Preist of Mitra). At that level , you get 3 heals. And they are blazing fast. I've also played the Tempest of Set. The Mitra priest does just as much damage, is harder to kill, heals better and solos better.

I'm level 18 I think, and I play the same class (Preist of Mitra). At that level , you get 3 heals. And they are blazing fast. I've also played the Tempest of Set. The Mitra priest does just as much damage, is harder to kill, heals better and solos better.

There are two group HoT (heal over time) spells, and one group heal: radiance. Radiance is great, but it can only be cast once a minute. It doesn't take a minute to recharge mind you, it just doesn't have an effect on anyone in your group if you recast it within a minute. The HoTs are great but don't do much for a self heal (read about cone healing and how heals have more of an effect on party members than yourself) or if someone is about to die and needs a big heal. One other "heal" that I use is included with Lance of Mitra which is a line of sight AoE spell that does a small heal for group members around it as well.

Don't get me wrong, I love my class so far. I just don't understand why there isn't more healing available. It feels like I'm a wizard with a couple of group heals thrown in for good measure. That being said, I can solo like a motherfucker. I have my whole routine down where I can kill about 4-5 mobs a level above me at the same time where other classes have problems with 1 or 2. The only class I've had problems 1v1'ing in pvp is the Bear Shaman as they have better armor, better healing (yeah, wow...), and better melee capabilities.

The speed of the heal, and the amount of the heal, will come into its own later. Personally, I feel the Priest of Mitra will be an essential part of any heavy-duty group, and certainly on a raid. One of the cooler aspects of the game (please god dont let them change this) is the positional block other characters can give nukers and healers. Whereas in other games a mob could just morph through the line of tanks like they were ghosts, in AoC, the tank has to drop... the tank can actually use his/her body to plug a gap and prevent a mob from attacking the ranks behind him/her.

That alone will change the dynamic of raids and group encounters, and it makes a 1 priest- 5 tank combo a plausible (and maybe preferable) strat.

Question. If the tank can block a mob from getting to the casters. Does it also block the casters from hitting the mob? Will casters need to sidestep out of the tank's line of protection to be able to hit the mob before darting back behind the tank?

At this point, no. Seems to be a purely physical block.
