really great thread so far guys, I see we've all put a lot of thought and effort into it.

Everytime someone says "zomg your'e a lawyer" I giggle myself to sleep at night. Its probably one of the most satisfying things I can hear. No matter how stupid I appear to be to you, no matter how asinine you think I am, I have achieved something you either never could or never had the motivation to try for, so thank you.

So here is my review for No Country and why it was amazing.

Good art has a way of reaching deep down into your soul and showing you something very special. Its not that it shows you new things, but it makes you come to organize your thoughts more clearly. This is how I felt about No Country after I saw it. I was in a trance when I walked out of the theater. What is the "point" of No Country? The point is that there is no point to life, everything comes down to a coin toss.

We view the world as good or evil, and everyone always says good things happen to good people and bad things happen to bad people, but thats not how reailty is. One of the good guys dies, the other one doesn't have all the answers and is just as lost as the rest of us. The "bad guy" who we are supposed to hate and wish ill upon exhibits noble character traits like devotion to duty and devotion to a code of living. No matter what you may think about the guy personally (and obviously oyu are supposed to think of him as an evil psychopath) he follows his rules to a t, no exceptions.

Woody Harrelson's character also really reinforced this argument. I think they chose Woody because when the audience saw him we all subconsciously thought "oh, well he's a famous actor, he must play a big part in the movie!" Nope. Not. Wrong. He is in the movie for all of what? 15 minutes and then gets blasted? The casting of Woody threw the audience because we got something we weren't expecting. We wouldn't expect someone like Woody to meet such an ignoble end, especially when his introduction scene was so long and drawn out (the part where he was talking to the employer and they were talking about the bad guy).

This movie is like a bible for modern nihilism. Nothing really matters, one way or another you are going to die. And it could just be because you crossed paths with the wrong person, got into a car accident, or whatever, it all comes down to luck, aka the flip of the coin. So you might as well try and make out with a suitcase full of money, because you must take all the opportunities you can if you ever want to escape the trailer park.

I haven't even really delved into Tommy Lee Jones' character's role in the movie but thats for another viewing I think.

I hope that this post was up to your standards Harlowe. I'm sorry for all the confusion I've caused, but when I see silly posts like the OP I just fly into a rage. The way I feel about this movie is the way Embar feels about Jesus, I just want to shout the gospel to everyone and I get very defensive. I believe the kind of thinking in No Country will drive the next great social upheaval the way the Enlightenment or Christianity did, its that revolutionary (revalationary? lol).

Actually, I'm quite sure that a good portion of the active board members have probably achieved as much or more than you and/or are still in college.

The movie isn't the bible for modern nihilism, you obviously don't know anything about the author or his stories. Read his other works and you'll be a bit more enlightened. You are a nihilist and a chronic misogynist, so you look for that or rationale for it in whatever you see, because those aspects are what appeal to that part of your nature.

Cormac McCarthy is the person that wrote this story and many other profound and human stories like The Road, All The Pretty Horses, Child of God etc and you are gushing over actors and a movie that tells a story that you don’t get it at all.

The story was written by one of the most accomplished and prized novelists (Nobel, Macarthur “genius” grant) Cormac McCarthy who is absolutely not a nihilist. He’s a humble, shy, and very private man who writes about life and death and says things like “Life is pretty damn good, even when it’s bad”. He writes about these things not as a nihilist, but as someone in awe with the journey, someone that deeply appreciates life.

You know what you should be getting out of this artist’s powerful works? Straight from the horses mouth – “simply care about things and people and be appreciative…life is pretty damn good. You should be grateful.”

By the way, that's a riduclous statement, who is this "we"? Because I can't think of a single person that would view the world that way or say things like "good things happen to good people and bad things happen to bad people". Whether they are religious or believe in some sort of "Cosmic Karma" they would never believe that all good or evil happens to a person depending upon whether or not they are good or evil, at most people think you can increase the odds of good or bad happening in your life by your actions and beliefs.

I think I can safely say that most people believe the expression "shit happens" to be a relative truth and generally that people are neither all good or all evil, but are human and in being human, they have both good and bad within them. Those terms are relative anyway.

Harlowe... you can't just change what I wrote to suit your needs. I did not use the world "all" in my statement. When I said people believe good things happen to good people and bad things happen to bad people I meant overall, I never once used all. I wasn't talking about a "shit happens" attitude, I think people generally do believe that everyday bad things are just random acts, but overall I feel people think that in a broad sense there is some order to things.

No Country for Old Men is a nihilist movie... you should go out and read something now and then. "Modern nihilism" "neo-nihilism" are all words that are regularly used to describe this movie.

And Im a misogynist for calling you a cunt? You are a cunt, how does that make me a woman-hater?

Yah, people really have accomplished more in college on these boards than I have *eye roll* Lets face it, the vast majority of the people on this board are wannabes, nerds, and old wastes of space who like to pretend they know anything about anything and just love telling other people their own silly opinions.

So if bad stuff happens to bad people in general... can you tell me what I did to be thrown into the bad person category? I'd like to find out. At this point, I might as well go the whole way and move on to genocide or Queen of Darkness.
And Im a misogynist for calling you a cunt? You are a cunt, how does that make me a woman-hater?

no no no Select. I don't think bad things happen to bad people in general, re-read my posts. And Select, use of a word does not define someone.

I know use of a word does not define someone. You are not defined as a misongynist because of your use of a word. You are defined as one because of everything you say relating to women. Maybe I'll read the posts again. Maybe not, I'm packing for a vacation.

(Why is board spell check saying I spelled "misogynist" wrong. Pretty sure that is the correct spelling.)

I obviously read more than you Walrus since you have no clue what story this author was telling nor are you able to express yourself without stomping your feet on the floor and throwing a hissy fit like a little girl. It's fairly obvious that if this board was filled with the wannabes and nerds that you claim, yet you still come here begging for attention, expressing your opinion and getting all butthurt when people disagree - that would make you a sad, pathetic little poser.

What we do know is that you have shown yourself to be a pathological liar. You didn't just call me a cunt you called the women in the thread a cunt for daring to disagree with your incoherent, chest-thumping opinion. You also cried about Calleagh's opinion making you lose faith in all women. You are a huge drama queen and misogynist. Calling us names isn't going to affect us. It's coming from a sad little poser. CUNT CUNT CUNT WAHHHHH WANNABES WASHED UP LOSERS WAHHHH. As if your little hissy fits are going to hurt our feelings. You're the one coming here crying for the attention of all the washed up nerd loser cunts and assorted people that couldn't possibly achieve the level of imaginary success you've had.

Face it, the odds that you are actually a lawyer are pretty damn slim since you are unable to express yourself coherently. You're a moron who can't handle people disagreeing with you without throwing a tantrum and making bombastic ridiculous statements. Like your little tantrum about knowing beer better than anyone else or traveling "I'VE DRANK ALL BEERS SO I KNOW WHAT IS GOOD!!" "I'VE BEEN EVERYWHERE". Who says shit like that.

You're just another sad liar on the internet pretending to be something you are not. Otherwise you wouldn't keep coming back here. But you do... everyday.

Hah Garrdor & Select.

I just want to add (because really I am amused by his broad-stroke name-calling of this entire board and how utterly ridiculous he sounds), whether I happen to agree with them or not, I think most of the active posters on this board are intelligent, articulate, insightful, diverse and interesting people. Why else would people (we) keep coming back here to share opinions on this gaming rant board that hasn't been a gaming rant board for years? Oh yes, because they are all LOSERS? Right? They all have no where else to go!

I have no doubt in my mind that people like Ddrak, Lurker, Embar, Partha, Klast, Jecks, Alluveal, Finglefinn and hell even Rsak are successful and educated people. Most of the other active board members are either in college or young enough (Garrdor, Select etc) to still be exploring what the hell they want to be and they are much more articulate and insightful than you'll ever dream of being.

I think your EQ1 period was your glory days, because frankly you don’t measure up to any of the active members on this board, and yet you keep coming back here talking down to people in the most ridiculous manner, it’s like you’re suffering from delusions of grandeur. I still laugh out loud at the I KNOW ALL BEER I'VE BEEN EVERYWHERE claims.

Sorry I don’t see any washed up-wannabe-losers among any of our active posters. Well, perhaps one. You.

Oh Harlowe =\ You still can't go around changing what I wrote, if you still don't see what the difference in the two passages that you're quoting, maybe you shouldn't try and use the big words.

People come here to share ideas? This always was, and always will be a rant board. People come here to blow off steam. Do you know how therapeutic it is to just come on here and troll / post / babble? Two days ago I wrote a memo about parole violators concerning Youth Authority regs. Do you know how absolutely boring that is? Writing on this board is fun and enjoyable, thats why I keep coming back, and I why I will keep coming back.

I didn't say I lost all faith in Calleagh because of her opinion, again your misquoting me shows that you like to skim and make judgments based on what you think other people said. I'm not even going to bother to correct you, the story was written above, go do yourself a favor and read.

And the whole cunt wagon thing? This is a good story. Calleagh posts her opinion, I blast her for it, and then 3 women come at me like a pack of rabid dogs. From my perspective, it was very funny and ridiculous. Hence, cunt wagon, as if someone had pressed a magic "cunt wagon" button or shined a light like the bat signal.

It still gets you that I'm a lawyer? Well I wish I could prove it to you. I could post a pic of me and my bar card or w/e but I hope you realize I'm not stupid enough to do that.

Enjoy your biggest fan Embar, one of the biggest wackjobs I've ever meet in my life. His ideas about the world that he has "shared" with the board make me weep for the future. How do people like him still exist? Embar, the 13th century called (yes I know I already used this joke last week) it wants its ideas back.

But please continue with the ad hominems (tehe, righteosness!). I can do them too. You are probably just a sad pathetic woman in real life, no kids, no husband. Or, if you do have a husband, you probably realize he's a pathetic loser not going anywhere. Otherwise, you have an ugly boyfriend, and the only reason you two are together is because you couldn't find anyone else. You better get your shit together, those eggs aren't getting any younger. tick tick tick tick tick! Oh, nice avatar, are you some super artsy chick or punk rock scenester? At your age? Awesome.

See how easy that was? Your posts can be boiled down to playground name calling. "Nu uh you're not a lawyer!" "Nu uh, you should go read!" "Nu uh, you're a pathological liar for exagerating that one time." "Nu uh you're a drama queen!" Please get some substance to who you are and what you post, okay?

And stop with all the lawyer crap. The only time I ever offered up that I had anything to do with law was when I graduated law school and made a post about it. Ever since then you and Embar like to say "oh, I can't believe you are a lawyer, or you're probably not a lawyer." Like in this thread, you called me out, so I'll respond.

Walrus
