I'm offended by the word delusion or someone saying you "hold a delusion." How can it not be considered offensive? It's the same thing as patting someone on the head and saying, "aww, you believe in something spiritual. Aren't you so cute?" (wink/wink)

The fact that you'd try to wrap it up in semantics is bullshit and you know it. Own your crap or don't.
Everyone holds delusions of one sort or another. It is nothing to be offended over. I have several myself, most likely. Self delusion is as human as it gets.

In light of that, the semantic part makes a critical distinction between calling him completely crazy and saying he is self deluded as it relates to the existence of God. To your point, making this distinction clear is "owning my crap".

That is such a cop-out. If you think everyone is self delusional, then calling them deluded is sort of meaningless.

Your such a human.......

That's blatantly shirking responsibility for your own words.

Yeah, what I heard was "let's have a respectful and well-reasoned debate that's neither." I miss debating this stuff with Klast :( /respect

Whether you agree with him or not, he has a lovely mind that Klast.

A dramatic retelling of Megusta's posts
Megusta: you believe in God....ahh then you are of the retarded persuasian.
Free: calling me a retard is offensive
Megusta: silly retard, everyone is a retard about something including, maybe me.
Peanut Gallery: yep offensive
Megusta: pfft, it's not like I called him a brain-dead twat of a human, so if you'd stop being whiny, little semantical bitches about it, we can get back to the respectful, adult discussion I'm trying to have about people believing in God being retards.

Spot on, Harlowe.

When it is time to completely miss the point you never disappoint.

Just because there is a semantic clarification required does not make the point invalid.

When I showed this discussion to a colleague I thought would find it interesting, who is a Rabbi who teaches theology, he was flabbergasted that someone would be offended by the concept that an aspect of human nature is to hold delusions about the universe around them.

Delusion: a persistent false psychotic belief regarding the self or persons or objects outside the self that is maintained despite indisputable evidence to the contrary; also: the abnormal state marked by such beliefs.

Can't see why anyone would be offended by that.

This is becoming tiresome. Kulaf, do you have any shred of intellectual honesty? It is quite clear that I am using it in the context of the following definition.

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/delusion
de·lu·sion noun \di-ˈlü-zhən, dē-\

Definition of DELUSION

1: the act of deluding : the state of being deluded

2
a : something that is falsely or delusively believed or propagated
b : a persistent false psychotic belief regarding the self or persons or objects outside the self that is maintained despite indisputable evidence to the contrary; also : the abnormal state marked by such beliefs
— de·lu·sion·al adjective
— de·lu·sion·ary adjective

Examples of DELUSION

He has delusions about how much money he can make at that job.
He is living under the delusion that he is incapable of making mistakes.
She is under the delusion that we will finish on time.
As the illness progressed, his delusions took over and he had violent outbursts.
Spare me your feigned offense at a harmless word and your attempts to distract the essence of the conversation with this idiotic sidebar is ludicrous and lacking in acedemic merit.

You would show a discussion on an old gaming rant board to a Rabbi? You really are an obsessed, narcissistic weirdo. Seriously.

That or a pathological liar that uses a made-up person in an attempt to give yourself credibility you have failed to earn honestly here.

When would any discussion here require academic merit? How ridiculously pretentious. Also, using the sockpuppet on-the-side (rabbi-teacher) to support your losing argument is incredibly fucked up.

I see that this conversation has been corrupted by the defensive and witless who have no interest in the content of the discourse.

Nothing to do here.

We have been over this ad nauseam. At least the pathological liar accusation, while boorish and patently untrue, is new.

Without getting into whether you really showed this thread to a Rabbi, or whether he was flabbergasted or not...

Do you really think it's unreasonable for a person to be offended or defensive when you use a charged word like "delusional"?

I might have used a word like "delusional" when talking about religion when i was a teenager, but it's an unnecessarily hurtful term and does absolutely nothing to nurture a discussion. Show some awareness. Show some maturity. And tell your Rabbi friend to get out more. He seems to have the same sterile textbook view of things that you have, being "flabbergasted" because someone doesn't like being called "delusional".

You made a flippant comment and derailed an otherwise good discussion by refusing to apologize.

Yep Free. I agree and we haven't been over where he came from ad nauseum, he's never really given any evidence as to where he came from out of the blue. He's a pathological liar or a complete narcissistic weirdo - to show a discussion from an old gaming rant board with under 20 people actively posting (who actually ARE familiar with each other after 7-8 years), to a rabbi teacher in an attempt to support their credibility because they have earned none, is fucking weird as hell.

This board and the arguments on it have that much effect on you that you seriously need another's opinion?? That is if you aren't just a complete lying sack of shit. Fucked up man. You are either a liar, a new account for an old poster, or some creepy weirdo on the internet.

The very idea that a rabbi/teacher would be FLABBERGASTED at the notion someone was offended by being called delusional for religious beliefs....what a liar.

I wish we still had that thread from Shyntlara (iirc), who after being called out for one thing or another, decided to pull out a thesaurus and attempt to write in a more scholarly manner (or at least stopped using "u" for "you") and claimed that she worked in the psych field, that she was just studying us for a paper she was working on and that she was entertaining her colleagues with our posts.

People *showing* things from here to outside sources for supporting opinion, always gives me that ....ooooh boy, we have a real nut-job on our hand feeling.

Sometimes for technical stuff. I can also see if somebody said something truly profound or groundbreaking. Hey, it could happen. I wouldn't completely rule that out seeing that this place is (usually) a pretty good concentration of IQ points :)

And yeah, there's something with this guy that doesn't sit right with me. Of course my hunches went from 100% before the brain injury to more like 80% now. But I have a good feeling about this hunch. I get the same creepy-heebie-jeebies possible-psychopath vibe, and my hunch says that there's some revelation out there that will support that vibe when and if that revelation ever comes out.

It is entirely possible that there is a bit of the proverbial Ivory Tower in myself and my colleagues.

Having said that, I do not see a reason to apologize for the previous misunderstanding of my meaning and context. The rapid transition from being offended at a word to stupid irrelevant accusations related to credibility tend to expose their misunderstanding as persons attempt to change the direction of the discussion.

If your skin is so soft that a word, properly used in definition and context and not designed to hurt, causes you to be offended then a theological or philosophical debate is the wrong place for you.

That "feeling" is paranoia and in the absence of evidence to the contrary is a delusion.

This "hunch" is as fictional as your God and, in my opinion, cowardly. You have no evidence to support wild accusations with no good intention behind them but to discredit anything I may post. Don't be so butt hurt that you must toss away your previously highly regarded civility in favor of a self perceived check mark next to the "win" box for this particular debate.
