'The Interview' cancelled

I don't know if this should be in the politics section, but I was curious what you guys thought about this. Apparently, due to the Sony Hack escapade, they've cancelled the release of the The Interview.

Frankly, I'm amazed that anyone (even Kim Jong-Un) could take a Rogen/Franco movie so seriously as to utter threats over it. I'm mind blown that Sony caved, too.

It's a straight economic decision for Sony - no movie chains showing then don't bother with a big release. No movie chain wants to show it because insurance typically doesn't cover terrorist acts so they won't risk the financial damages (including inevitable suits for not providing sufficient security given they were clearly made aware of the risks).

These are not nation states with standing armies. They are corporations. Can't compare.

Yeah, those same corporations that were begging for people to go out and do their normal routine after 9/11 now don't have the balls to stand up to terrorists themselves.

FBI released a statement yesterday putting these threats at the feet of the North Korean government.

Which raises an interesting question: Is this not a blatant threat to commit terrorist acts on American soil by a foreign government? One that has been apparently caught with their hand in the cookie jar already? I don't see how this has gotten such little attention. I feel like it should be a major issue given the news that it was NK basically stealing private information belonging to US citizens and threatening to blow up others.

The US has been stealing private data for a very long time now and is claiming it has the right to do so. It's very hard to cry foul against another nation for doing the exact same thing.

Name one country that is not "stealing private data".

How is this "the exact same thing" exactly? Sure nations have been spying on each other since there have been nations.......that is nothing new. Engaging in an attack on a private enterprise is COMPLETELY different.

(There's a few other alleged cases of the US leaking intelligence on foreign organisation to domestic corporations to enhance their bargaining position, but can't find the URLs right now)

The hacking and spying thing isn't really a big deal in my mind. It just seemed more meaningful considering they got caught and turned around and outright threatened to attack American citizens.

In my mind, that's barely a step down from a declaration of war. I just don't understand how/why the White House hasn't made some sort of response, either directly or indirectly. There's just so many underlying issues here. They managed to actually (on an incredibly small scale) make a successful attack on the economic interests of the US. They did so very publicly and openly. I just wonder how much more they are going to attempt now that this went off without so much as a raised eyebrow in their direction. They pushed the envelope here and weren't pushed back and it makes me wonder if that'll make them a little bolder in the future. I just don't like the policy of ignoring NK and pretending their threats (and obviously their intentions) don't pose an issue.

It's looking more and more like this was not an NK attack, but a disgruntled former Sony employee with hacker friends. Security experts are fairly confident that due to the location on the Sony network of the different data, that someone with inside knowledge of the topology and with admin privileges provided GOP with the information they needed for the attack.

Yep - looking very much like nothing to do with NK. All the evidence is an inside job with assistance from Lizard Crew and other well known groups.

Going to be some tough times at the FBI if they don't actually have the evidence they thought they did.
