Well that's a whole lot of awesome! I'll probably finish this one up in a day or two. I'm going to be sad when A Dance of Dragons is finished, because then it's going to be years before we'll get another one. I can really appreciate now, why everyone was so excited about these books.

You know, they have been getting into more Arya, and some Sansa in this book as well, so is it just because there isn't any Jon Snow in A Feast for Crows that has people have grumbling over it? I think it's a good book, I don't find it slow nor too many new characters, but then again maybe reading multiple Wheel of Time books gave me a better appreciation for what slow, plodding and numerous side characters can be.

Spoiler question....

Harlowe, woooo! Storm of Swords was BADASS! Just so much epic success. The addition of Jaime was a big one for me, and the political situations amped up hardcore.

As for Lady Stoneheart . . .
Hidden Information!
I don't know that we have any better understanding as to what she is. Ddrak has some great chaos VS order theories with the undead in ASOIAF. Visit those if you can find them, or maybe he'll repost. I'm still fumbling around in the dark as to what is going on same as you.

My theory (and not based on any spoilers) is that there are at least two different types of undead in Martin's world. Mindless "Others" and those who keep some semblance of their past lives (Lady Stoneheart/Cat and Coldhands). But I'm not sure. Thoros raised her, correct? He had some success with others coming back, but I think Cat might have been too far gone perhaps and thus came back not fully, uh.... "there."

Then again (DD, please jump in), Thoros is different than the undead rising beyond the Wall.
My impression of AFFC is that I just started caring less and less about the Ironborn. But, that's me. I kind of felt the same way about the Dorne storylines (except for Myrcella).

I mean, it's great to get a POV from Brienne and Asha (and Samwell). But some of the others just started bogging me down. And, with that huge time gap between AFFC and ADWD, I had forgotten a lot of names.

I found ADWD far more interesting than AFFC namely because of the return of many awesome characters and I liked many of those additions as well.

You know that's a really good point, I wasn't thinking about the book progression from the perspective of people waiting years for the next book - here I am jumping from one to the next, so everything is still fresh.
Hidden Information!
My one gripe is really that I'm just not interested AT ALL in Samwell and Gilly. I don't find their story or interaction the least bit interesting at all in AFFC...in ASOS he was an awesome politician at the end though!

Not very well developed theory, but I see the Lord of Light as a force of pure *order* (not good) in the universe. Cat is consumed by blind justice on anyone and everyone who harmed her in life, and is rather terrifying to me as an undead. The mindless undead seem to be a force for chaos, but not particularly "evil" as you find more and more about them. It just struck me more as a Babylon 5 "Vorlons vs Shadows" plot where the world would probably be better without either side screwing shit up.

About 10% through the last book and all I can say is ...oh Cersei....you silly bitch.

I'm already feeling bummed about not having any more Song of Ice & Fire books to read when I finish this one.

ADWD is big, though, and very dense with lots of stuff happening. I really enjoyed the shit out of it.

But be aware that Martin seems to have an obsession with a few things in this one:

1. Farts. Like.... loud, thunderclap farts.
2. The word "slavering"
3. Women who describe orgasms as, "I don't know where I end and he begins."
4. "Words are wind."
5. "Leal"

I do think it's because he finished it and it went through a major whirlwind editing to get it out ASAP.

#1 and #5 are definitely noticeable already! The word "leal" just feels clunky in a sentence to me - like a literary rumble strip.

Ah, but can he use all of them in one sentence?

And so I farted, a great thunderous victory that was so great I hardly knew where I ended at the fart began and lo, with slavering leal to my own method, I proclaimed, "Your words are wind, but my wind is words!"

Ahh! I think Ddrak should give that same challenge to Martin himself. :D

Where are you now, Harlowe? I love that we get Tyrion again. He's my favorite!

I'm ....
Hidden Information!
at the point Asha was trying to bugger off from Deepwood Motte, not sure who was attacking (they said the wolves, so thinking Stannis might have been successful following Jon Snow's advise) and just took an axe to the head and am now back to Tyrion. It is great to have Tyrion back! I'm still worried he's going to end up with that nasty greyscale shit, but right now he's currently in irons on his way back to his sister, because the dude's rampant whoring has gotten him into trouble again! Not the actual whoring, but because of the whoring he was nabbed for the reward. Of course, I have NO IDEA what is going on with Cersei since she is currently being held by The Faith (what the hell was she thinking reinstating the orders of the Faith Militant ...good grief).

Tyrion and his whoring... ahh yes!
Hidden Information!
He really travels the most in the book, I think, but it's fun to watch him maneuver. When reading ADWD, I loved Stannis, just LOVE him. I think I always had a thing for him, but he's just THE guy . . . and there is an LOL part that has to do with him (indirectly) later in the books that made me bust up out loud.... Won't say more than that. I also started to like Melisandre more in this book. Or, see her perspective on things at least.

That is a weird thing about the last two books ....I feel like I actually "get" Melisandre now, and don't dislike her character. I really LOVE Stannis. I loved his interaction with Jon Snow as well. Also Jaime, I've come to really enjoy him that last few books.

Jaime is great. I really think he was in a horrible position when he was on the kingsguard for the Targaryens. Holy hell, that would have to suck. Kind of glad he did what he did, though, even if it meant breaking his vow.

I also liked the Samwell POVs. Just something fun about reading him. And Arya, too, though her chapters got super freakin' creepy in ADWD.

Samwell's parts were driving me a little nuts in the previous book because Gilly is tiresome. :D

Yeah, Gilly was a bit . . . wearisome. But I like where they've taken Sam. If I remember in AFFC....
Hidden Information!
Didn't Jon send him south to become a maester? I think that totally fits him. And did you notice Jaqen H'ghar again? At the beginning of AFFC? The alchemist in the prologue? Not spoilery: THEORIES

Yes!

I absolutely think it's him!! I asked my guy and he either played dumb or he didn't catch it, but when they described the scar he had, I was like SHIT YEAH that's Jaqen! I think Maester is a great position to put Samwell in, I hope he makes it back to Jon.

Yeah, it makes you wonder, though....
Hidden Information!
If it takes a long-ass time to become a maester then Sam is either out for a while learning (and would he even finish before the end of the series?) or he gets sidetracked.

I do wonder who Jaqen is supposed to kill--assuming he's on a mission of some kind. I almost wonder if the Iron Bank in Braavos has hired him and is waiting to see if certain debts will be paid.

I also wonder who Arya might someday be set up to kill if she becomes a full-fledged assassin. (I don't think that's spoilery.) Lots to contemplate.
