Can you see the external HD when you plug it in?
Is it powered from the mains or just the USB?

all i see is the software and when i open it i see nothing other than a bunch of technical mumbo jumbo. does it matter that the files come from a full version of win 7 to a dumbed down 32 bit win 7?

I mean, when you plug it into the new computer, does it turn up in Windows Explorer (click the "Computer" icon on the desktop) as a disk or not?

What do you mean by "dumbed down"?

Check to see if you can see hidden files and folders under Folder Options.

Wait... read your original post again. Are you saying you'd seen the files at one point from your desktop, and now you can't? Or that you've never been able to see the files from your desktop?

My first suggestion is take the EHD to a friends and see if they can see anything.
