Re: Rant Board Weight Loss / Exercise Thread
Bastard I LOVE those shoes - I have both the Merrill Dash and Merrill Trail shoes! Trail are great or the cross country routes I go out on and the Dash are fabulous pavement shoes. I use waterproof Teva cross-country shoes in the winter - my feet get too cold and they (minimalist shoes) don't have enough traction for a MN Winter.
I haven't gone through as many shoes as I use to, because I've cut way down on my miles - which is a good thing because A. I'm not 20 anymore, I don't want to put a lot of wear and tear on my knee's and B. now I can splurge on nicer shoes. I run for mental health now more than anything else. I just like the air, the movement and clearing my head.

2nd night running in them, no heel striking. Progress is progress.
They honestly feel really good on cement. Then again, all my sidewalks were recently (2 years ago) re-done and are really smooth.

Up to .92 without having to slow down because I can't keep up my breath. Running with a much better in shape co-worker after work and he's really good at keeping me on it and chasing that mile.
Mile comes next week; Hoping to hit 3 in the next 6 weeks; 5k in 7 weeks.

C25K is an awesome program, I can't recommend it enough when starting out. Especially Mia's program (I know I whore her out anytime running comes up, but she's awesome).

Currently doing 3 days a week, likely going up to 4 next week.
Been making really good progress. Just need to focus on the breathing and moving.

You didn't know? It's actually some what common place for people in marathons to shat themselves. That's like a thing.

It's a high impact, simple movement exercise. It causes shin splits, joint issues, and while yes it is better than doing nothing at all, that's about the only thing it's better than.

Re: Rant Board Weight Loss / Exercise Thread
An activity being "better than nothing" is actually a fucking big deal dude. The nothing is what is killing people, not fucking joint pain and shin splints. Personally, I don't get shin splints, the only time I've had any kind of physical issue was when I did a couple marathons too close together and I ended up injuring my fascia muscle. I don't do marathons anymore, and I have no joint issues. Then again I run in minimalist shoes and practice more of a chi-running stance.
So screw you and your snotty t-shirt dude, I love running.
Our bodies were designed to run around and play.
I've never actually seen someone crap themselves and I've ran NYCM, Grandmas and the TC Marathon multiple times. I'm sure it's a thing, but it's not common.

Haha love it!! I'm not actually pissed, I'm mostly giving him shit for dogging my beloved activity. Three mile runs in the sunshine are bliss. I feel like a freakin' Buddhist when I'm running outside in the Summer.

Re: Rant Board Weight Loss / Exercise Thread
Oh and Allu, on the long distance thing - I've never had to go while on a run, short or long. Urinate, sure....if you are running for 3 hours, because odds are you going to need to pee even if you were just sitting on a couch. Even running a marathon I can only think of one or two times per run that I've stopped at a biff and it wasn't to poo.
Maybe having a standard routine and not eating half dozen small meals each day or a lot of snacking helps. I also don't do any kind of a carb loading. To me, I think it's weird to need to poo after just running 5k - unless you just ate and then slammed some caffeine. Because 5k is only a half hour or less. Unless you eat a lot of shit or have IBS or something, that just seems weird. But I guess any physical-endurance type exertion could get the inner plumbing going.
The only bad thing is long distance running will cause chaffing somewhere...toes or any seam of any piece of clothing, nipples etc (that why I think it's insane to wear baggy shorts running long distance). But that doesn't happen at all if 3-6 miles is your range at least not for me.

LOL this is awesome. I cannot run. I know I won't stick with it. But I do roller blade and walk a lot.Taxious wrote:One of my favorite quotes that always helps me exercise is: "No matter how slow you go, you are always lapping people on the couch."Harlowe wrote:An activity being "better than nothing" is actually a fucking big deal dude. Re: Rant Board Weight Loss / Exercise Thread
I firmly believe in doing whatever you enjoy and whatever you can commit to making a regular part of your life. Bursts of working out like a mad dog for 3-6 months (usually after New Years or before Summer swimsuit weather or your next class reunion/wedding etc) then dropping out, aren't going to help you as much in the long run as doing something consistently as part of your lifestyle. imo.
For me to be consistent with weights, I need to create a set-up at home. I fucking hate going to the gym that often. Especially in the Summer. It's not fun, it's annoying, it's more time consuming, it feels oppressive, it generally smells like stale sweat and that weird smell fake-baked skin has...fucking ick. I'm an outdoor person for physical activity, doing it indoors is completely forced, but at least in my home, it's a far better environment and saves me about 45 minutes of just traveling, changing and what not.

I'm the same way, Harlowe... Even though me and the Sun have a love/hate relationship.
I've converted to doing Body Weight workouts I found at NerdFitness.com while out running, or around the house/neighborhood.

Additionally: I've lost 18lbs and quite a bit of body fat % since I started all this.

Re: Rant Board Weight Loss / Exercise Thread
That's awesome Fall, and I need to check out nerd fitness. That's a great idea - including body work while running. I use to live near this great park with "stations" around this 2-3 mile loop for body work. It was pretty much the perfect situation for me.
