Pretty much everyone agrees that the patent system is out of fucking control. It's becoming a patent everything situation that no one pays attention to & spins into some insane legal battles between megacorps. I don't know what the answer is, but New Zealand is trying this:

It has to be reformed, along with Copyright law. Both systems are functioning the exact opposite as intended and totally out of control. Patent laws are harming innovation, and Copyright laws are harming consumers. And pretty much every public servant has taken shitloads of money from both these lobbies. That's the real problem. The GoP has opportunistically picked up these issues, so maybe we'll see some movement. They are right. The Obama administration is definitely in their pockets, but what they fail to mention is that they are too, and their sudden interest is probably just feel good theater to raise desperately needed sympathy.

At least there's much more public awareness now, which can't be a bad thing. Nerds, rise up!

They recently added language in the law to say "as such", which basically muddies the whole situation because nobody knows what the fuck that means:
