What are you listening to?

Post by Harlowe »

I thought we had a thread like this before, but couldn't find it. Since the exercise thread mostly shared work-out music, thought I'd start a thread we could share shit we're currently listening to or find interesting.

I’ve been kind of obsessed with this song, since it was on The Walking Dead and I absolutely love the powerful acoustic versions I hear them do.
Wye Oak “Civilian”

Some of my recent shit..

Smoosh “Slower than Gold”
Pyyramid “Don’t Go”
Horse Thief “Warrior”
Friends “Friend Crush"
Polica “Wandering Star”
Summer Camp “Losing my mind”
MS MR “Hurricane”
The Temper Trap “Sweet Disposition”

In general enjoying
Muse “Madness”
Anything from Wild Beasts
Anything from Imagine Dragons, but I really like Radioactive

On the strange side…
Steam Powered Giraffe - Automatonic Electronic Harmonics
Jay Munly & The Lee Lewis Harlots - Goose Walking Over My Grave

Some classical goodness that I picked up from a friend
Vassilis Tsabropoulos & Anja Lechner - Dances
Ludovico Einaudi – Divenire
(Actually anything from that man)
classical-armenian -Arax - Ashxaroums, Sayat Nova
Ólafur Arnalds - Old Skin (he has a lot of good stuff out there, most instrumental )
Dutch group Flairck

This should be a good thread. I've heard that Wye Oak song somewhere ... don't watch Walking Dead though. And Wye Oak sounds like old Sonic Youth or something-can't quite put my finger on it.

Love those dude-with-guitar/chick-with-guitar acoustic tunes. That's why I like the Civil Wars. Simple is good.

I love this duet with Taylor Swift, from Hunger Games.

Another good one. They broke up but I think they are back together.

I "think" they might be getting back together. I know they still have a new release for 2013 they are working on. Maybe not working on completing together, I don't know, but she's tweeted about new CW music.

Since I can't see which Civil Wars one you linked, I'm just going to post my favorite one.
Poison & Wine

Love their version of Portishead's Sour Times too..

I listen to the same things over and over and over and over again.

Mark Knopfler wins so far. Epic

*edit* Here's a chance to insert my old band's first show back in 2010.

What are you guys listening to music on? My usual music player is a 64GB Acer Iconia tablet with Ice Cream Sandwich and Bluetooth EDR headphones. It doesn't quite have the WiFi reach to roam the whole house, so I usually keep my current playlists on it with a USB flash drive. I don't see a lot of folks with tablets that have a regular USB port, which I don't understand. This thing can power up a 1TB portable drive on battery power. Best fucking MP3 player ever as far as I'm concerned. I don't hold the WiFi range against it because the only thing that reaches my man-cave is the laptop, which I bought because it has the latest Atheros radio in it. It even gets Starbucks a half mile away. So, other than the mediocre radio, the tablet kicks ass for pretty much all media. And it actually has functional hardware acceleration. It also has a badass Bluetooth radio, which makes up for the WiFi.

The music apps all suck. I ended up using a simple folder player since all the other apps seem slow catching up to me moving all the files around and running off the network when in range. It's the only good way I've found to keep my playlists across all different devices.

I listen to my iPod, the broken one. The headphone jack is a goner, but I have a cheapie iHome knockoff at work for the 12 hours I'm there and the gym's treadmills have chargers so I can listen there when I'm doing cardio.

As for what I'm listening to? There's a newer band out of Chicago called Kids These Days with a pretty good sound.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Q9HpkyePu0. If you poke around on Youtube, there's a link to getting their debut full length album for free, too.

I have been playing the hell out of the HEAT soundtrack. Holy shit. Awesome stuff. Lots of instrumental guitar awesomeness (Edge from U2 has some great work). AMAZON LINK

Lisa Gerrard also has a great piece on there, Gloradin. I have such a huge girl-crush on her.

Mystery Man is one of the coolest, sexiest fucking songs I've ever heard. Put on the candles, get the lady (or guy) naked, and go. The only other song that is better for awesome sex, imho, is Great Gig in the Sky by Pink Floyd.

Hang on until around 1:45 then keep going. Then at 3:45, yeah! O time

Here's great gig for fun...

I've also been listening to Mumford and Sons. I heard one of their songs of Stargate Universe of all things:

And, to show what a cheesy super weirdo I am, I love Amanda Brown's version of "Stars" (Grace Potter song). Yes, I watch the VOICE!

i have rediscovered the blues. i cannot get enough of them. contemporary or classic, it doesn't matter. even kurt cobain's "where did you sleep last night" is from an old blues song. Leadbelly did it in 1944.
