New Comp - Thoughts?

Post by Taxious »

Think I will be ordering this all soon. Any thoughts or suggestions? I remember building my last comp and posting a thread like this in 2007 (just had to look up the year, wow time flies) with Dd giving me some good swaps.

I'm a little confused about my SSD. On most of the pre-built computers I'm seeing an interface of "SATA 6GB/s" where this one says nothing about that.

SATA III and "SATA 6GB/s" are the same thing, so you're good there.

Not bad. Corsair isn't my favorite brand of RAM but should work fine at least. I think I'd rather have a Gigabyte main board, but I know people who swear by Asus. Nice touch with the Caviar Black, though depending on how you are using it, the Caviar Green may be fine (and cheaper). But just off the top of my head, it's a nice looking build.

Gonna go with this HDD instead and save $110. I probably wont even use most of 1TB, so 2TB seems a little unnecessary.

Not a bad setup, a couple notes.

First, you're a gamer right? The 120gb for your OS is a great idea, switching to a good SSD for my OS made the largest single performance increase I've ever seen. Great stuff. However, if you are gaming, in addition to this, when Black Friday comes around I'd suggest you get a 256GB one on the cheap & put your games on it. 120GB isn't enough to hold much after the OS, certainly not many games at all. Throw your OS & maybe work apps on the 120GB, put the games on the 256GB, then Store all your media (Movies, Music, ect) on the 7200RPM drive. And yeah I've heard some great things about Black Friday & SSD's. I plan on grabbing me at least a TB worth. Which brings me to my next point.

That motherboard has 2 Sata3, 4 Sata2. This would be ok if you weren't going to add anything else, but it's going to eat a donkey dick if you want to throw a few other things in there & are forced to use SATA2. What I'd recommend instead is something like this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6813157301 which has basically the same specs in the same price range AND has 4 SATA3 connections.

Finally, I don't like that I can't see in the case you linked. I'm kinda picky about how my case is setup. Working on a shitty case design is the bane of my existence, but it's probably fine.

Speaking of Black Friday... buying a $1000 rig 3 weeks before it is kinda silly bro. You could save yourself some bank with some patience.

We're looking to score a couple laptops Black Friday. We're not going to play the "yours is better than mine" game any more, so we're going to start buying 'em 2 at a time so we both have the same machines haha.

Black Friday for sites like Newegg and TigerDirect is kind of hit and miss- sometimes they beat those deals for cyber Monday, and sometimes the deals are stupid or have catches- but I would agree to wait a few weeks just to see. We also have the option of sending our slaves to wait in line all night somewhere like Target or Walmart if it's a good enough deal.

So yeah, that's a very good point. Tax might score on some of his components if he waits.

Ehh I find the black friday online deals to be lacking and going into a store for sales like that freaks me out. The idea that people trample others to buy things really irks me.

I am really excited about the SSD for gaming and such. I realy don't play anything too graphically intensive, but I'm going to win load times on League of Legends all day long at least. :D

Thanks for the suggestions, I saved about $200 swapping out the HDD, motherboard, and memory.

I just noticed that case is a Rosewill. They make crap. I'd recommend against anything Rosewill. Go for an Antec or Coolermaster instead. Anything but Rosewill.

What? Hell no man. I mean online deals. Black Friday/Cyber Monday. I wouldn't go out on Black Friday if they were giving shit away free.

Gotta agree on the Antec cases - love mine.
Don't know anything about RaidMax as a power supply maker, which concerns me a little. 530W may be ok. I tend to look for 700-ish these days.
I'd probably suggest a Blu-Ray drive as well. Stuff's gonna need it sometime.

You think so? I have a feeling it will pass to the way of cloud storage and streaming media. I have 0 investment in blu-ray and I don't think I'll ever need to "catch up".

We haven't touched a piece of physical media for entertainment in the last several years. Our home theater setup has no optical drives whatsoever. Everything streams from the large file server in the basement over 1 Gbps Ethernet.

In fact, the only times I've touched physical media in years has been to install Windows - that's it.

I didn't even notice, but yeah 530W is too weak. You'll end up with shit happening like your video card locking up or bsods or reboots.

Also, you might want to reevaluate your video card. That one is pretty wimpy too. Yeah it has a good chunk of memory but I can't imagine buying anything that wasn't a 256-bit card. Any time I build a new rig I try not to think about what I want it to do, I think about what I WILL want it to do. I know you don't want to spend more money, but you don't want to have to buy a new card down the road or have yours play like poo.

Oh & I agree with Freecare. Unless you have some specific reason for the Blu-ray you can forget it. I haven't touched any physical media outside of thumb drives or portable hard drives in at least 2 years. Probably more. Even my windows is from an ISO.

Everything I own comes from ISO too (15 years of uninterrupted MSDN subscriptions and hoarding) but I've been too lazy to switch from burning the ISO to a a disc and using a portable optical drive to install Windows to just using a flash drives. Don't you have to prep the flash drive somehow to make it boot from an ISO or somehow "burn" the ISO to the drive? I'm sure there's some utility to do that. I've been too lazy to look it up since I don't do that many.

These days most Windows installs are straight from the ISO to a virtual machine. Windows installs in like 5 minutes that way. I have 2 full 2 TB drives mostly with just with virtual machines and ISO files.

And of course day to day I use UltraISO or MagicISO to mount ISO images as a virtual CDROM drive on my physical machines. My main desktop doesn't even have an optical drive. I bust out the little portable the very rare times I need it, like if somebody brings a disc over to my house or something.

But yeah, unless there's another removable media revolution, the disc is dead. But if they came out with a 100 TB optical disc for $1 a piece then that media would bounce right back. But it's not looking that way. The party with Moore's Law is pretty much over.

Yeah I debated including any form of optical drive in this build and decided $15 for an everything-but blu-ray drive is fine. If I ever do use it, it'll be for burning music / movies for the parents.

I'm excited to retire my current PC into a media slave. I've been using having to find compatible formats to stream to the xbox for too long, and even then the audio balance is awful and the video is low quality. I played a 4 gig .mkv on this computer, HDMI'd to my TV, the other day and it was beautiful.
