Minecraft
So I'm starting to see a fair number of us playing this game, and to be honest I'd love to see what you all have done as that's part of the charm and ways to get new ideas.
Anyone interested in either posting videos or trading save files?

Re: Minecraft
Minecraft is hard to categorize, so the best way to understand the game without playing is to watch some play videos on Youtube. One of the biggest hooks for the game is the near limitless potential for you to create whatever you want. (People have created 1:1 scale Starship Enterprise, 8 bit CPUs, gigantic castles and more).
I probably watched 4 hours worth of this guy playing through Minecraft because they were so entertaining just to watch.
Here is his tutorial video and you can view his playthroughs on his youtube site.

Here is a decent playthrough video.

Minecraft is basically legos plus the EQ 1 crafting system plus zombies in a chatroom, as far as I can tell. :>

Re: Minecraft
I'd been building a massive glass tower/pit combo, but that file got corrupted a couple times and now I don't trust it (The file still loads, but for example Cartograph can't make a comprehensible map of my world anymore). I moved it to world 5, and started a new world 1. Haven't played any multiplayer, and honestly I almost exclusively play on Peaceful. If it weren't for creepers, I'd only play with mobs on, but I can't stand the idea of a creeper coming along and blowing up my creations, unlikely that it may be. Additionally, I find that constantly fighting off mobs is little more than a distraction from the creative element, and for me this game is a giant box of nature-themed Legos.
So I started a new file. Been building a cabin, and have plans to add onto it. Going to be rebuilding the tower/pit shortly. Just recently figured out how to make working double-doors on one switch. It really shouldn't have taken me 2 hours to figure out, especially with youtube vids showing me step-by-step, but it was 3am.
Anyway, maybe later I'll upload my corrupted file somewhere.

Re: Minecraft
I started by finding an island and then dug it out. Now I have a mine shaft that goes all the way to the center of the earth with a number of mining stations along the way. Built a main base of operations and then a fortress on top of it. Lately I've been working on a floating bridge that will link up a few of the islands with an additional 'tower in the sky'. I also created an island which I'm building a house on.
Haven't played in a bit due to Black Ops, Ghost of Sparta, and now Sega's new iPhone mmo, however I will be spending countless more hours with it.

Re: Minecraft
I was bored & curious after this post so I looked this game up. Then I wondered how the fuck a game with 1994 graphics could be so popular so I figured I must be missing something & got it... then I spent the next 3 days almost non-stop. I gotta say it's nice to see though. Proves that throwing more graphics at a game doesn't necessarily make it better. Dude has made 20 million in 2 years off this 44 meg game. Considering there's no advertising, almost zippo distribution cost, & no real man-power cost the profit margin here has to come close to EA/Rockstar levels. That's pretty crazy.

If one of you super nerds gets into this & hosts a multi-player server let me know.

Re: Minecraft
I'd hop into some multi-player shit too if someone set it up. Right now I've got some baddassery going on in a SSP world. I've built myself a pretty sizable mob grinder (LOL I just did the math. I have approximately 8,400 spawnable tiles spread across 12 floors, and I'm still expanding it) that can net me a stack of sulfur (Only shit I use from the grinder) in around 45 minutes. I leave it running while I go to work once every week or two to resupply.
I've built a base in between some desert mountains. Underground tree farm, sugar cane farm, auto-dispensing cactus farm in one wing. 12-forge smelting factory and multi-floored sectional storage rooms in another wing. Planning to eventually carve out a cave in another wing, large enough to build a house in, possibly a pond, maybe even pull in some grass from the outside but I'll probably astroturf with green wool instead, to negate annoying passive mob spawns.
That is, of course, there isn't some update that makes me want to gen a new map. I almost considered it when they made sandstone spawn naturally with this last update, but fuck that noise. I can craft sandstone and I've put dozens of hours into this world already.

I have multiplayer going at throx.no-ip.info - don't know how good the connection will be from Oz though, so not guaranteeing it'll be playable. Need to tell me your account name to whitelist you.

Re: Minecraft
A lot of bugs, but it's coming along well. The servers that use white lists & don't allow douchebag kids on them are fun. People have created some pretty awesome cities & such.

Hey there,
Have you changed the "hellworld=false" setting in the property file? I'm not sure if that will make a difference. I set my server up last night and noticed that setting and figured it might enable/disable the Nether. I havn't tested it to find out for sure.Ddrak wrote: Hmm... MP still has some bugs. Nope - didn't even look in the prop file. Will check it out tomorrow. Fired up a SP game to see the differences for now.Baginns Hobbiton wrote:Have you changed the "hellworld=false" setting in the property file? I'm not sure if that will make a difference. Re: Minecraft
Anyone else playing on Dd's Server? I played on a couple servers from across the pond that weren't bad. Not sure if an Oz one will be too far.

Re: Minecraft
Ha - the prop file change makes the whole world ONLY the netherworld, and portals still don't work.
And let me know if anyone else wants whitelisting on my server?

Minecraft: over $33 million in revenue so far

Wondering how this whole Minecraft thing is working out for creator Markus "Notch" Persson? Pretty well, I'd say. He says that his little indie game has made over $33 million in revenue so far.
Gamasutra did the math: There's 1,813,527 paying customers for the title, which would put the total revenues for the game at over €23 million, or just over $33 million. In a Reddit thread where Persson was asked how much Minecraft has made so far he breaks it down:
A lot. It all ends up in an account somewhere, and I try not to look at it. I get a normal salary these days for day to day stuff, but there's a big pile somewhere. The game sold about 800,000 copies at 9.95 euro and then so far 1 million more at 14.95 euro. Paypal takes a cut, there are taxes, and such, but it's still a huge wad of money.
