vista?
my computer is exactly 2 yrs old and, against my better judgement, it has vista. to be fair, i've not really had any major issues with it but last week i got the BSD. i figured it was just a fluke. a few days later i got the BSD x3. everything started to slow down to the point of extreme sluggishness, mouse not responsive, lock-ups, etc. i know enough to be careful in my surfing habits but clearly something is wrong. ran a defrag and it took literally hours to do 1/8 of my system. tried to download ad-aware but in spite of dl it twice i never could get it to work. so i ran spybot instead. again, it took hours. did av scan with avast. nothing. this morning so far everything seems normal.
my question is.....is this a normal part of vista once the HDD starts filling up? i still have 113 gigs of empty space on HDD. should i try another av? i had avg up until a few weeks ago. the inconsistency of what it does is probably the most baffling part of the entire problem. i should just say fuck it and get win7 but that's not really an option atm so if you have experienced this or can tell me why i am i would be ever so grateful!!

Same with mine!calleagh wrote:the inconsistency of what it does is probably the most baffling part of the entire problem.
I had Vista on my main computer at home for a while with the attitude of "why does everyone hate this so much, it's working fine for me!" Then everything started screwing up out of the blue (screen of death) much like yours is. It eventually got to the point where it would only be on 1-5 minutes before another BSOD.
I dove into trying to fix it a little but ended up just installing XP on it and have had no future problems.

Re: vista?
Could be one of four problems:
1) Your running up against a lot of temp files and other junk that has accumulated. Delete it. (not likely causing the problem)
2) You have a virus or other infection. (Very likely causing the problem)
3) The memory for your HD cache is dying. (Possible problem, it happened to me. I would get a BSD when trying a "warm" reboot. Ran HD diags and the HD failed.)
4) Your main memory is failing. (This is also likely a cause)
I would recomend running Anti-Malware from Malwarebytes:
http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

If you would be so kind as to post that as a screen-shot as requested it would be appreciated. Each drive has different thresh-holds, and the color indicators represent issues...

Re: vista?
Just a guess here since I have never used that utility. But the "Soft Read Error Rate stab" and "Hardware ECC recovered" look out of wack with the other counters which look to all be at zero. So my guess is the cache memory is bad. But post Fall's screenshot and let's see what it looks like.

Open the side of the case and blow the dust out?
Hard to really know what's wrong from that description. Can you go to c:\windows\minidump and email me (jw@chase.net.au) the two or three most recent? I can open them up in a debugger and see exactly what caused the crash.

Re: vista?
When you have the window up, hit ctrl + c + PrtScn Then just open up paint and do a ctrl + v and it should paste that screen shot into the paint window. Then just save that picture as ScreenShot.jpg (or whatever, lulz) and upload it here using the boards.calleagh wrote:not sure how.Falundir X`Viento wrote:If you would be so kind as to post that as a screen-shot as requested it would be appreciated. Re: vista?
Thank you.
Your hard drive is fine, however it has almost 2 years of spinning time so I would keep regular backups. Definitely mail the file Dd requested so we know what is crashing your system and how to proceed.
Unfortunately with Vista there were quite a few issues, and it's difficult to troubleshoot w/o having remote access or hands on.

Re: vista?
How about just posting the BSoD error code? That alone can point us to the problem.

Re: vista?
Got the file. For everyone else, here's the output from windbg:
The error is "pool corruption", which is kinda annoying because it's one of the few errors that doesn't actually give you the driver which actually caused the fault (it means something scribbled over some memory it shouldn't have and when the original owner of that memory went to look at it, the system exploded). Assuming this has only just started, the thing I see newest in the system is Avast!. Try uninstalling it and see if the issue goes away. I'm doubly suspicious of Avast! because it's actually the thing that crashed (aswMonFlt is one of Avast!'s files)
(insert 4chan joke here about pool corruption)

DRIVER_CORRUPTED_EXPOOL (c5)
An attempt was made to access a pageable (or completely invalid) address at an
interrupt request level (IRQL) that is too high. This is
caused by drivers that have corrupted the system pool. Run the driver
verifier against any new (or suspect) drivers, and if that doesn't turn up
the culprit, then use gflags to enable special pool.
Arguments:
Arg1: 00000004, memory referenced
Arg2: 00000002, IRQL
Arg3: 00000001, value 0 = read operation, 1 = write operation
Arg4: 821008b3, address which referenced memory

Re: vista?
Or download Hijackthis and remove it. CCleaner might get rid of it too. Hijackthis requires a bit more tech knowledge than CCleaner does.
