It's funny that NASA is being challenged today with doing something they did 40 years ago with analog instruments.

Didn't your mama ever tell you not to tango with a carrot?

From a 1989 interview:Garrdor wrote:It's funny that NASA is being challenged today with doing something they did 40 years ago with analog instruments.
Michael Collins: President Kennedy said that we were going to land a man on the Moon and return him safely to Earth, that was his goal. President Bush, whom I consider to be a president as dynamic as Kennedy, I think, in today's climate would have to say, 'I think we ought to dedicate ourselves to the goal of perhaps considering appointing a commission, after due deliberation with the Congress of investigating the feasibility of certain long-range goals for the space program, perhaps even including a mission to Mars.'
Made me lol.

I think I heard somewhere that the Apollo program cost about 4% of the GNP. I don't think you could get away with something like that these days.

Wiki has a pretty good break down of it all here.
The smallest percentage since 1960 goes to last years whopping 0.55% of the federal budget.
The largest percentage I see is in 1966 with NASA getting 5.5% of the federal budget.Klast Brell wrote:I think I heard somewhere that the Apollo program cost about 4% of the GNP. I don't think you could get away with something like that these days.

Going to Mars (humans going to Mars) is magnitudes more difficult than a jaunt to the moon. Mainly because of the physiological and psychological concerns in regards to humans being in space that long.
Correction Mr. President, I DID build this, and please give Lurker a hug, we wouldn't want to damage his self-esteem.

Well, remember that escaping our solar system is the single most important issue we face because OMG SUN EXPLODES!

Going to Mars is likely to be a one-way trip.Embar Angylwrath wrote:Going to Mars (humans going to Mars) is magnitudes more difficult than a jaunt to the moon. Mainly because of the physiological and psychological concerns in regards to humans being in space that long.

Sure will mean pizza delivery will take longer than usual. But at least it will be free if they can't deliver in 30 minutes.

Re: 40 years on
But you have to have some way of catching that pizza when it arrived. When the orbits of earth and mars are a at their closest the pizza would have to travel at .19C At their farthest distance the pizza would have to travel at .7C One advantage of pizza delivery at relativistic speeds is that the subjective time for the pizza would be less that 30 minutes. When it arrived it would be nice and hot.
