Grave of the Fireflies
... Holy shit.
This movie is intense to say the least. There's a live action made-for-TV version floating around on the net, but it's in Japanese and is missing subtitles. I'd love to see someone like Clint Eastwood make a live-action version of this (after seeing Letters from Iwo Jima).
Warning: This is an anime. Some people don't like anime... like me for example. I'm becoming more open to the idea/style as of late, ever since I've started watching some of the larger anime movies (Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Akira, etc)
The movie takes place in Japan near the end of WW2. The story follows a teenaged boy and his little sister trying to make the best of things during the allied bombing campaigns (in which they lose their home and parents). Pretty gruesome and heartwrenching stuff. That being said, I'd have to agree with one of the top-rated IMDB reviews with "The best movie you'll only see once"
I give it a 5/5

Re: Grave of the Fireflies
Hahaha, animation nerds consider Grave of the Fireflies and other Studio Ghibli films to be above anime. They're Miyazaki films. Although Miyazaki didn't do Grave, his studio did, his name carries enough weight to just say that for the less-informed.
Spirited Away, Kiki's Delivery Service, Princess Mononoke, etc. are above the silly pop culture anime
And I have yet to see Grave. I've been actively avoiding it because I know I'll cry and I just haven't been in the mood to have my heart wrenched. I'll see it soon... when I want to bawl.

It's a great film, and it's based on a true story. Though the guy said it painted him much more sympathetically as the brother. I cried!
I absolutely love all the Miyazaki films and Studio Ghibli is awesome. Spirited Away is my favorite though. I am not a big anime fan myself, but I don't consider these "anime" either. I think the only actual anime that I like is Cowboy Bebop, Hellsing, Witchhunter Robin and Berzerk. =)

I loathe anime with the hatred of a million Klingon warriors ready to butt-rape a bunch of enemies. I just can't fuckin' stand the "hee hee hee" girl-voices and the stupid dubbing and the fucking lame, ass-tard acting.
But . . . I really really liked Spirited Away. If there are more out there like that, I'd probably watch it.

Hey there,
Grave of the Fireflies was pretty good though I don't think it lived up to the hype on the netflix reviews (they claimed it was the best Anime ever). I liked the change in atmosphere and I always appriciate any movie that paints war in a realistic light (nobody wins). I really love Miyazaki films and have been trying to watch as many as I can.

Some other Miyazaki films in order of how much I enjoyed them: Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, Howl's Moving Castle, Princess Mononoke, Castle in the Sky, KiKi's Delivery Service, The Cat Returns, Porco Rosso, My Neighbor Totoro.Alluveal wrote: But . . . Baginns, I enjoyed all of those, but Porco Rosso was "meh" for me. Out of curiosity which anime would you call the "best anime ever"?
Hey Alluveal, you should check out "Witchunter Robin" it wasn't your typical anime either - more of dark tone and none of that giggly girl stuff. I really don't like the TEE HEE stuff at all. I think there is one character like that in Hellsing, otherwise it's mostly a bloody vampire series.

I'm pretty much with Lulu here. About the only Anime I could ever stand was Bebop and that was too short. I loved Princess Mononoke though, so might give this a go.

Re: Grave of the Fireflies
Allu, try all the stuff Baginns recommended.
Your daughter might like My Neighbor Totoro (Although the new Disney dub isn't as awesome as the old Fox dub). Subtitles are preferred, but I doubt your little one is reading yet
Kiki's Delivery Service is slightly older than Totoro, but she'd probably enjoy that one, too.
I believe The Cat Returns is the sequel to Whisper of the Heart. I've seen Whisper, I need to get a hold of The Cat.
Off the top of my head, these are the same "higher quality" that shouldn't be classified as "anime" from other studios besides Ghibli: Perfect Blue, Paprika, Tokyo Godfathers, and Tekkokinkreet.
These are all movies. No series here
They're all pretty profound and Perfect Blue has some sick plot twists.

That was Miyazaki's dream pet. The whole thing was for him, which is why it was so bizarre and had less mass appeal.but Porco Rosso was "meh" for me.

I love Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle. I watched Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea and thought it was pretty good too.

Re: Grave of the Fireflies
Hey there,
Yea, I didn't enjoy Porco Rosso or Totoro nearly as much as the others. Rosso came off odd at times and lacked the magical world that I'm used to seeing in Miyazaki films. Totoro was the opposite and had all the magic but just seemed to be missing something plot wise. Though I would say it's worth watching for the Cat Bus alone.
It's hard for me to pick a best anime. I like them in different ways. Spirited away is pure art and would probably be at the top of my list, but I also like some oldies like Akira. Valley of the Wind has the best story in my opinion.
I just added some more anime to my list, thanks Select.

How the hell did you get Ponyo, Tax? As far as I know it's only been released to the LA film festival. Don't tell me you downloaded a movie for one of the most struggling film industries.

Round four, Allu; not anime.Do these flicks have tentacle sex?

Well the undubbed video is kind of all over the place via filesharing, but I don't know where the subtitled version is.

If he downloaded it and doesn't plan to see it in theaters, he's really disappointed me as a person. Of all the entertainment industries to rip off.

Ponyo was good but I don't know if I would ever watch it again. I should do something to compensate for DL'ing Spirited Away though as I've watched it a ton.

Re: Grave of the Fireflies
Blearg, I was hoping you weren't going to say Akira (I was hoping for something awesome that I haven't seen) because that movie really can't compare imo. It's just an old classic that people have a sense of nostalgia about it, because it was one of the early quality pieces. But being better than say Grave of the Fireflies or Miyazaki films, I just don't see it. It isn't the best visually nor storyline, so that's why it's difficult for me to see that as better than rest.Baginns Hobbiton wrote:but I also like some oldies like Akira. Hey there,
That's pretty much it. Akira was the first anime I saw and thus it holds a special place for me.Harlowe wrote: Blearg, I was hoping you weren't going to say Akira (I was hoping for something awesome that I haven't seen) because that movie really can't compare imo.
