Procrastination

It's the evening of the last day of finals and I am a procrastinating machine. Haven't even studied for one of my two finals tommorrow, plus a project, plus a few assignments.

Sometimes I procrastinate way worse than others. This week was really, really bad, but last term finals week was a breeze - I studied my ass off and didn't think twice about it. How do you guys handle it? Is it a more or less severe thing for you guys too?

I'm curious about you gradschoolers too, since (hopefully) I'll be doing the same thing in 18 months.

Speaking of gradschools....man I hope I can get in. Least I'm not trying to go to med school, cause then i'd be FUCKED.

As I've said before, if you're headed for grad school you'd better want to be there. Otherwise you'll be eaten alive in seminar by people who actually give a shit about the subject.

Your experience as a graduate student--provided you get in somewhere, were you going to stay at Western?--may be different.

As far as procrastination goes, I don't have the luxury anymore. I study because I love what I do.

I like parts of what I do. I still have a lot of awkward sorta-hard-but-boring-as-hell classes, like o-chem, that just take some serious willpower to keep up on.

I won't be staying at Western for Graduate school, mostly cause we don't really have a graduate school for anything besides education.

But yeah, I just gotta work on getting in somewhere. I have a wide range of interests, and none of them are super competitive. I figure I'll do pretty good on the GREs, i'm a standardized-test kinda person. My weak spot is my GPA - I have a couple classes I need to retake then I'll be sitting right at the 3.0-3.1 mark. I mean I know I'm not getting into UH or UC-Berkley, but I figure I still got a shot at a decent program, especially if I can get a sponsor.

Oh who am I kidding...I don't have the slightest idea what i'm doing.

How not to procrastinate? It involves really looking ahead and understanding the consequences. A lot of procrastination happens because you're focused on the moment, not the far, important future. It is willpower and it is a form of maturity.

I used to procrastinate terribly. I finally stopped by the start of my Junior year when I became competitive and started really looking ahead in life.

And I agree completely with Arkaron.

Back the first 2 times I went to college I was a terrible procrastinator. Put everything off till the end so I had to learn months of material in a couple days. I flunked out twice.

Studying is boring. The thought of sitting down to hours of studying is enough to kick off all my procrastination instincts. And while I'm spending those hours studying any little break I take is such a relief that I have to get over my procrastination all over again. "Oh I'll just look at a couple more things on Digg". About an hour later I remember that I was trying to study, and say "Ok I'll just look at these couple last things." Lather rinse repeat.This time around I came up with a little system all on my own. It probably wont work for everyone, but it works for me.

I use a timer. Set it for 40 minutes and study. If I think of some thing else I want to do I save it till my 40 minutes is up. When the timer goes off I set it for 20 minutes and goof off. When the timer goes off I set it for 40 minutes more studying. Then 20 minutes of play then 40 of studying and so on.

Doing that breaks it up in to tolerable manageable pieces. 40 minutes of studying doesn't seem so bad when I know I have a break coming. And 20 minutes of fucking off lets me unwind enough that the next 40 of studying doesn't seem so daunting. And distractions are much more manageable because I know I can get to them soon. Even if I'm not done with my distraction, I only have to put it down for 40 minutes and then I can get back to it.

I did 6 hours of that cycle last Saturday. I don't think I would have been able to get in the 4 productive hours of studying that generated if I had not been using that little trick to manage my time. I'll be doing it again this weekend because I have a Python test on Monday.

If your grade trend is generally positive over the last 90 credits you can highlight this in a statement of purpose or have an instructor mention this in a letter of rec. That being said, funding endowments for graduate level students are tanking all over the nation due to the economy and some programs will not admit people they can't fund. So, if you're not admitted the first time around and want to go, try again the following year.

Get everything done as soon as you can, and you have more time to goof off. I have the fortunate ability to pretty much master whatever subject is at hand with very little effort, however since high school they were all subjects i gave a shit about, which made it easier. I got a 97 in Firefighter1, a higher grade then all the guys, second only to the other female in the class, i got a 90 in EMT< my only downside was confusing several multiple choice questions on tests which really was just a reading failure on my part, i got a 98 in CNA and a 95 in Phlebotomy, but i gave a shit and it was only one class at a time. I didn't study for Phlebotomy, not a single bit. I looked at one worksheet for the departments , and i had to study the sheet with the tubes and departments and additives, but it was nothing more then memorization and i can repeat them to you now if necessary.

Ark is right, you have to WANT to do what you're doing otherwise it's not really worth it (something else i've learned as i've gotten older). There are some things you do because you have to, and while you may not be that interested it still has to be done, but generally speaking college is something where once it's done, it's done. If your chosen professions has nothing to do with o-chem then you just have to suffer through it for now and then you won't have to worry about it anymore, and that might be a bit more motiviation to not have to repeat the class =)

I hate to bump an old post, but I'm pretty sure that this year, Western has upped their grad school options to include some science options, medical options (via OHSU satellite campus), and a new IT/Computer science graduate program. It's all pretty new stuff though from I've seen. Here's hoping that their computer science courses get better as you climb the ladder, but somehow, I doubt it.

I have yet to hear anything good about the CS/IS program at WOU, but the tech rental room is pretty fucking sweet. What are you majoring in, anyway? If you're ever around NS then I'm sure we've met, I pretty much live there.
