Yeah - Orb and TVersity both perform much better on the PS3 than they do on the X360, mainly because the PS3 supports a lot more file formats than the X360 so doesn't require as much transcoding.

Of course, the PS3 has a blu-ray drive too, but that's not really a huge point for me given that an X360 + a blu-ray player is cheaper than a PS3. I'm not as anti-PS3 as I used to be but still think they really need to drop the price point a hell of a lot to actually make an impact.

Yes, because I get anything other than lols from 4chan...

Secondly: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStatio ... igurations

PS2 compatibility: No on the current 80gb and No on the current 160gb.

C: $100 you get a game and 80 more gigabutts. Yes, the harddrive is easily replaceable... I don't really care about that and could've Googled it myself... Quit being such a fanboy.

Fallakin's right, Xilly. No current PS3 model supports PS2 backward compatibility.

They *do* all support PS1 stuff though.

You're right, my fault.

I bought my 80 gig back in 2007 so mine will still play ps2 games. I hadn't heard they had scrapped that feature. Guess that means they'll continue producing ps2s. I'm not really sure why they couldn't just add the software emulation via a firmware update, since they stopped putting the emotion engine chip in when they stopped making the 60 gig models. IMO, if you're going to get a ps3 these days, get a used one. I've heard the newer ones don't have the card reader slots (sd, memory stick pro, compact flash, etc) and iirc they only have two usb ports while the older ones have 4.

Either way though, it's still a fantastic media center solution. Plus, the ps3 also will allow you to format the drive to dual boot between the ps3 firmware and linux. My absolute favorite thing about the PS3 is it's compatibility with the PSP. Using remote play, while I was in Clearwater Beach last year, I was able to log into my PS3 via the open wifi in the marina and stream movies from my pc across my home network to the ps3 and then from the ps3 at my house in Indiana to my psp with me in Florida with very little stutter. Shit was so cash.

Was actually the first I'd heard of it too. I got no clue why Sony is removing stuff that really isn't that expensive. Emotion Engine, sure. That's gonna be a $50 saving or so, but USB ports? Firmware that's already written? None of that is a real expense at all.

Agreed on the media center stuff.

Yeah, it doesn't make a lot of sense to me either. The 80gb/40gb PS3's are able to play PS2 games via software emulation. Now, if that's software emulation, doesn't that just mean that the firmware bios on those drives is flashed to read PS2 discs? Wouldn't that, in theory, be able to be added back in with a system update? Sony, much like Microsoft, releases console updates usually every few weeks to add new stuff to the playstation store/xbox marketplace, and they can improve on the system's capability by unlocking previously untapped resources in the hardware, if I am interpreting this correctly.

I also don't understand why they removed the two of the four usb ports. That is essentially pennies of cost they are saving, unless they did it to reduce power consumption, which I know is what they did by downclocking the cell processor. Since the older PS3's can support up to 8 controllers (I think it supports 4 by bluetooth and 4 wired), I'm kind of confused as to which direction they are planning on going by removing certain things. Maybe they realized it's rare 6-8 people would want to play a game at the same time? I'm pretty sure the 360 can only support 4 controllers, either all wireless or 2 wireless/wired. The card readers, I can totally understand why they scrapped those. I've never once plugged a card into it, though it's nice knowing the option is there if I wish to utilize it.

I have had an Xbox 360 die on me and need to get replaced. Luckily my PS3 is still going strong. If it died I would miss the backward compatibility very much.
