PSP vs DS

Post by Taxious »

I'm thinking about picking up a portable gaming system, but am having trouble deciding between the PSP and the DS. Right now, I'm leaning more towards the PSP, but it's still up in the air.

Games:
I just looked through the game list for both units, and really, God of War is the only "must have" game for the PSP that I want. Similarly, Super Mario 64 was the only game for the DS that would be a "must have." Are there any other great games for either unit that someone here would recommend?

O.o

I just noticed that there is a twisted metal game out for the PSP, and I love me some twisted metal.

My sister has both and I've seen her use the DS a lot more. She takes a 12-14 hour train to get to school and it's reading and playing on the DS that get her through the trip. She prefers cute, quirky games which might not be your cup of tea, but the trip is one way to measure the amount of entertainment.

That'd be funny if I could play at work.

Speaking of ADD, I haven't taken Adderall consistently in ~4 months. I hate the way I feel when I take it, but tedious responsibilities (homework, cleaning, etc..) are so much more of a chore without it! Taking it through college has been like cheating at school.

Why is it so hard to go to class without drugs? :P

PSP is suffering from horrible sales, and you are starting to see many stores stop carrying their titles. I know Target has nearly forsaken the PSP, and the only physical store I can find a good selection of games at is a Frys. There are two serious issues I have with the PSP as I used to own one but sold it. First is Sony intentionally has a limiter on how high the volume goes with headphones. If you are in an area with a lot of ambient noise (airport, train, bus) it will be difficult to hear the sound on the system via headphones. Secondly is the PSP has a horrid load time for most games which can exceed 2 minutes per 'stage'.

I also have had a DS that I had a ton of fun with, but gave to my younger nephews since I haven't had a need for a portable platform.

As a final note, one thing that I loved about the DS that the PSP flawed in was the 'pickup and go'. DS you could close and toss in your pocket or a purse and pull it out when you want to play. PSP you have to buy additional accessories to protect it, which increases the bulk and reduces portability. That all being said, I'm really sad about the PSP as it had great potential, and there are a few games I really really would love to play on it like FF7 Crisis Core, and Phantasy Star Universe was just released for it (and I'm an addict for PS*).

Damn!

A friend pointed out to me that DS games are a lot easier to copy/pirate compared to PSP games. I wasn't really considering doing it in the first place, but it's always nice to know that I have options.

The PSP looks cooler (IMO) and has more of what I want, but I'm starting to lean more towards the DS with what everyone is saying. Plus, I really hate Sony as a company and try to steer clear of buying their products.

Your friend is correct. A simple search online will show you how to use a particular memory card and software to run thousands of games on the DS. Not to mention 500 game blocks are some of the most popular torrents online.

Holy shit, a two minute load time between stages?

I've had my PSP for almost four years and I haven't had an issue with long load times. Maybe you had a bad PSP.

I have both, the PSP is better. However, I'd suggest you wait until the next version comes out. The PSP has a few design flaws that make it a pain in the ass (Like the power switch location, fucking stupid). The next version with the slide screen looks like it's gonna rock.

The slide screen is a joke concept.

As a side note, I also have both: See if these pictures help. The NDS is running Final Fantasy IV, the PSP is running Dissidia: Final Fantasy.

The PSP is easy as shit to mod w/ a firmware flash, and uses Memory Stick PRO DUO memory. The DS you will need to buy a custom cartridge chip (I use a DSTT, cost me about 30 bucks w/ a 4gig microSD) with a SD micro slot. They are both phenomenal systems with some very great games on both sides of the fence.

*** PUTTING THIS IN CAPS AND STARS SO YOU DON'T MISS IT!! IF YOU GET A PSP, BUY A USED ONE BECAUSE V3 OF THE MOTHERBOARD IN THE 2000 SERIES AND THE 3000+ SERIES CAN NOT BE FLASHED! ***

PSP: I'd recommend Resistance Retribution, Final Fantasy 7: Crisis Core or any of the other Final Fantasy games, God of War: Chains of Olympus, Silent Hill Homecoming, Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow, etc..

DS: I'd recommend Any of the Castlevania games, any of the Final Fantasy games, The World Ends With You, New Super Mario Brothers/Mario 64 DS/Mario Kart DS, Wario Ware: Touched, Cooking/Gardening Mama, Contra 4 (The hardest game ever.), etc..

It doesn't look like they have a release date for this yet, but I agree, the pictures of the new slide-screen design look pretty sweet.

I'm still pretty torn on the. PSP has a USB port and can be connected to a TV, where (as I understand it) the DS cannot. How often am I going to be playing a portable gaming system on a TV though? /shrug

You are correct. The DS can't hook up to a TV. The PSP can. You can also hook up a PS3 controller to the PSP and play some games, and you can download stuff from the playstation network to the PSP. PSP can also run emulators when flashed. I have a NES, SNES, Sega Master System, Sega Genesis, Sega CD/32X, Playstation 1, MAME, GBA, N64, CPS1, CPS2, NeoGeo, and a DOOM emulator for my PSP on my back up drive.

And the slide images are a joke to co-incide with the rumor of Sony announcing a PSP branded phone. It's a hoax/rumor, not fact.

Way back in the day I had a Sega Gamegear, does that count ? My sister had a Nintendo gameboy, this must have been 1990-1991

We have had first and second generation gameboys but thats it. I have to buy one for everyone, and i don't have 500 bucks to drop on used gaming systems. However I appreciate the feedback because I've been thinking of getting the oldest kid one for her next birthday, or depending on how things go when i'm done with my class as a present anyway
