This verdict is messed up

Basically the guy was declared not guilty of assault for attacking and partially paralyzing a cop who was attempting to arrest a family member. That's messed.

Looks like it was unintentional... just a bad scene gone wrong.
Correction Mr. President, I DID build this, and please give Lurker a hug, we wouldn't want to damage his self-esteem.

Running across and jumping at a cop to headbutt him from behind was unintentional?

Well, from the video, I don't see that the headbutt was intentional. He seemed to dive into the officer, and the real damage probably resulted not from the headbutt, but from the officer's head striking the pavement.

I'm not saying the guy shouldn't be punished for attacking an officer, but I can't say that he set out to harm the guy. It looked more like a blocking body shot to me... with tragic consequences.

I'm not defending the guys actions, but I can understand how a jury might see this as just a tragic accident. Same reason why cops aren't charged with murder when they accidently and unintentionally shoot a guy.

Wow you really need to look at that video again. See him toss back his shoulders and lead with his head? He was trying like hell to headbut the cop. What occured after is just a continuation of the action. He needs to pay for both. Look at the 38 sec mark. If you were trying to tackle the guy you would be leading with your chest and arms head up.....not with your head and crown down.

I'll bet money the guy's a rugby player.

My problem is the verdict came back as no criminal action at all (which also means the cop gets no compensation from the police insurance for his injuries). They reasoned the guy was acting out of self-defense.

On the headbutt vs tackle:

He was definitely trying for the headbutt (and didn't try to say he wasn't in court).
