Ari, I wouldn't recommend this series for really young girls, especially one who's still in middle school. It doesn't promote healthy relationships. If you read it, you'll see what I mean. In regards to relationships, it 'OKs' stalking, controlling, abuse, and a number of other things that are unhealthy influences for a girl who may not be old enough to really pick up on them and will instead focus on fantasizing about how 'romantic' the story is. A few Twilight hater sites have some good in-depth explanations on it. A lot of the hate-sites are full of garbage, though. If she's that determined to read it since it's the popular thing now, definitely read it before she does.

I think it's crappy for young girls because it's all about being the helpless, obsessed idiot. It's a huge Mary Sue series.

But girls probably read worse.

My sister is two years younger than I am, but likes to dabble in younger fantasy books as well as stuff for our age. I'll ask her. I think she said Tamora Pierce wrote strong women, the Protector of the Small series in particular. I'll get back to you on it. You can probably Google something like "Strong feminine role models for a 12 year old to read" or "Good books for a 12 year old girl".

Most of her books are back home, but my sister recommended what she could off the top of her head.

Tamora Pierce is a good author for her age as I said earlier.
The Last Unicorn
Stardust
Coraline
The Two Princesses of Bamarre by Gail Carson Levine (same person who wrote Ella Enchanted)
The Chronicles of Chrestomanci by Diana Wynne Jones
Polly and the Pirates (This is a graphic novel)

She doesn't know what your daughter's maturity level is, but she guessed that Terry Pratchett would be a little too heavy with dirty humor, at least until she's a little older. She said The Witches series might be a good exception.

Sister just told me about these lists:

Tamora Pierce has a few lists of recommended reading for young adults :)

I'd review the books on the lists very well. One of her lists for Young Female protagonists has Carey, Jaqueline - KUSHIEL'S DART (& it's sequels) on it, and that is definitely not something I'd be giving a young girl to read. Well, unless you want her to get an early education on BDSM and read explicit masochistic sex scenes.

She'd be better off with the Twilight series.

I'll go through several lists and see what i think fits. She has a higher reading level then 6th grade, but her comprehension of various situations is not as mature and I'd prefer to keep it that way... if you know what i mean =)

I just have to say, after buying the Rifftrax for this movie, I now love Twilight. We laughed our asses off at certain parts. I think one time I actually cried I was laughing so hard.

Just an fyi, the sample track for Twilight is not nearly, nearly as good as half the material in the full Rifftrax for it. Basically you sync their audio (it costs anywhere from $1.99 to 3.99 to download it) with the movie, they give you cues through it to double check your syncing. It's just like watching Mystery Science Theater 3000, only with new big budget movies. It's awesome.

We just did Matrix2 & Jaws - I love these!!!!

I think a friend and I are going to try some of these tonight. Is it the type of thing where you have to see the real movie first, or would it matter?

It looks like the users on the site really like the Twilight one. What are some other great ones? I'm thinking Star Wars and Matrix.

I've only seen Twilight, Matrix2and Jaws so far (and all were good) but we're going to get Two Towers and Indiana Jones this weekend.

I think seeing the movie first is probably going to make it funnier. For Twilight it was hilarious because of how serious and angsty the mood was. Also, you sort of go "oh yeah, why didn't I catch how stupid that was the first time around".
