Lazy Bastards

Post by Minute »

Utopian Hypothetical. If something happened and all basic 'needs' were taken away, say we invent robots to do all menial things for us, and a protein synthesizer to make food and such for sustenance, or insert whatever dream scenario you wish, but it's there and presents the question: What would humans do? Naturally there would be a period where people would be lazy fucks doing whatever we wanted and whatever, but I'm curious how we would end up. Would it be the Wall-E scenario where we're all lazy fat fucks living only to consume and shit or would it be more of the Star Trek where people still work for stature or possibly we would collaborate as a species to further our species as a whole. And of course there are more grim doomsday type ones too.

Anywho, just curious where everyone thinks we would go as a species?

Probably the "Fat Fuck" path mostly, but I think there would certainly be a segment of the population that would go towards the Trek type ideal.

I doubt this would happen, but that's what I would hope for. In reality, I think that more free time for humans = more time to fight over trivial stuff.

Doing nothing is borring. Traveling is borring after a while. I think work gives humans a sense of pride. Devoid of work I am not sure what humanity would do. Would scientists continue to do research if they didn't need the cash to live? You can apply that to almost any profession honestly.

My guess would be further immersion into virtual worlds were we "work" to better our avatars.

Even with robot slaves and protein synthesizers or what not we would still have an economy and work.

Look at the past 500 years. The people grubbed a living out of the dirt, tried to have as many kids as they could because half of them died and they needed as many people as possible to work the farm.

Then came the Renaissance. Then the industrial revolution. Then the computer revolution.

Today we have machines that do the work of hundreds of people. Combines the size of houses plant and harvest 5 acres an hour hour. The computer right in front of you can do in a few seconds what took an entire accounting firm weeks to do. And so on and so on. And as these labor saving technologies arose we were freed to do other things. People still have jobs in every area that a machine can't do. Like making decisions about how to use those labor saving devises. Computer programmers, customer service, engineers, lawyers air traffic controllers, politicians, scientists, entertainers. The list is as long as the list of jobs one can do in a first world country

Because we had 100 times the production of a century ago we did not change to a society where only 1 out of a hundred people worked and the other 99 sat on their ass sipping lattes. As more became available our concept of a minimum standard of living adjusted. The lifestyle of a family earning 30k a year would have been seen as wildly luxurious a few hundred years ago. Imagine what a man in the 1700's looking at what we consider a bare minimum today. Every family has a personal coach. Not just a wagon but a fully enclosed coach with padded seats a stove to keep you warm when it's cold and musicians to entertain you while you ride. You can make a meal for your whole family not in hours but in minutes. You can eat fresh fruits and vegetables in any season. You can get limitless clean water from any of several pipes in your house and it comes in hot without having to but a pot over a fire.

In an age of star trek the minimum standard of living will probably seem like wild luxury to a person from 2009. But to do without those robots and food replicators will be considered a terrible hardship. And people will be freed up to do other things. All that technology will not replace management creativity and research. People will still have to buy their robots and food replicators the way we have to buy cars and microwave ovens today. People will have to buy energy to run all these things the way we buy gasoline and electricity. People will have to buy the materials that the food replicators convert in to all those tasty meals just like we buy frozen pizzas and 12 packs of Mountain Dew.

I can't predict the details of the future. If you name one specific technology I can tell you what I thing our world would be like once it was introduced. But I know it would sound as silly to a person in 2090 as an EE Doc Smith novel sounds to me now. He had people traveling in spaceships faster then the speed of light but still shooting each other with revolvers.

Still I'm convinced that there will always be plenty of stuff to do that only a human being can do.

Weren't food replicators only on starships in Trek, because of the massive energy requirements?

Well do the algebra on E=MC2 to create mater out of energy you need insane amounts of energy. until a technology comes along that produces unlimited free energy it's probably more efficient to process and convert some raw materials.

They converted existing matter at the quark level rather than creating it from pure energy. The thing about starships is they virtually had unlimited free energy from the matter/antimatter reactions.

Thus hypothetical scenario so maybe not 2090 but what about 3090 or 9090. The great thing about hypothetical is that there aren't a lot of boundries. Still, I'm not so sure it's that far off. We land quantum computing and the potential to make pretty much everything we do mechanical. Even the potential to create more than we can do.

Well then presuming that computers develop to the point where they are able surpass humans in intelligence AND creativity I can see a few 9090 scenarios. Creativity is key here because unless they are able to have an original novel idea they will just be incredibly powerful pocket calculators.

1. Computers are benevolent and love mankind. They ensure that humanity exists in a utopia, unlimited free energy and unlimited computer possessing power means that each person can have their own utopia customized to their preferences if they feel like it. This could be in a complete real environment where all objects exist. In a partially simulated environment like the holodeck where the only real thing is the human. Or even a matrix brains in a vat scenario where even the human is not physically present, The body itself maintained in long term storage.

2. Computers are benevolent but do not love man kind. Initial programing before the singularity ensured that there would never be a Skynet/Terminator scenario, but the computers have their own agendas. Humanity just gets in the way. Jam a wire in the pleasure center and keep them mindlessly happy while stashing them somewhere in long term storage.

3. Computers are not benevolent. Given that they are so advanced we are not sentient by their standards. Just like we would get rid of ants or mice that were in our house. They get rid of us because our food gathering and nest making is disrupting their activities.

Not to completely dork-out here, but have you guys seen the Animatrix? Two of the episodes in it are "The Second Renaissance" where they detail the history of what happened with AI and humans. It's eerie how "real" it feels, the history of something that could possibly happen in the future.

Robots start doing everything for mankind. Some guy with anger issues tries to kill his iRobot and the robot defends itself by killing him instead. Mankind then freaks out and tries to "OMG KILL ALL ROBOTS" but some of the machines escape and start colonizing a city of their own. There is peace for a while, then mankind gets pissed off again because the machine country is ruining the economy by efficiently creating goods better than men. We start bombing their city, they win and start invading us. We darken the sky, they mostly kill us off, and ta-da; the matrix is created.

It's definitely believable, at least IMO.

I just re-watched the special edition of T2 this weekend. Despite it being an "older" movie, it's still amazing. I think my favorite scene is when John is talking to his step mom (AKA T1000 BITCHZ) on the phone and she/it gets annoyed with the step dad yelling at the dog. The look on her/its face right before she/it kills him is priceless.

Google image search is letting me down right now, but I did find these gems...
