Interview with Nick Kristof (and others) on this subject. I listened to something similar on my local NPR station a couple of weeks ago. It's tough to listen to, but listen to this guy's perspective on why sex slavery exists, and where the solution may be.

Most of the ones not starving are there because they are exploiting the others. The ones that are in that position without exploitation are so rare they don't have the ability to enact social change. That's a third world country. How are you going to fix that without national economic improvement?

If I could magically give everyone in the world more empathy and make them less selfish, then maybe the world could be saved. But I don't think that will every happen. The human race will keep "fucking each other over for a goddamn percentage" for the rest of time.

I'm on record as saying that the only way that Communism (From everyone acording to their skills......to everyone according to their needs) is ever going to happen is through unlimited power. I hate to draw parallals to Sci Fi but Star Trek is very much based in Communism. No currency.......doing things just to better yourself, not for money. But the thing they have that we don't is unlimited power. They can walk up to a replicator and tell it to make them 100 tons of gold and there it is. So money becomes worthless and poverty, etc. is eliminated.

So if we ever do discover fusion and some asshat doesn't try to keep it all to themself......the world could be a great place to live.

The standard of living in both China and India has raised significantly for most people over the last 50 years. It has to be a slow process and not some Great Leap Forward though or it all just falls over in a messy heap.
