While the guy is bound to become a "martyr" to the general population when he gets to trial, it may actually end up doing a lot of good in the country. If people decide to toss shoes at their politicians rather than shoot at them things will rapidly improve.

Of course, if the Maliki government plays it stupid (which is entirely possible) and cracks down on protests and the like with violent force then the whole thing goes south pretty fast as well.
