Re: Religulous
Saw it today. It was funny. It wasn't so much a case against religion itself as it was a call to action. He begins it by saying 16% of Americans don't identify or associate with a religion and are very quiet about it. He then compared that stat to the numbers of other major-minority groups which are much smaller and have lobbyists for their interests. Then he went on to make fun of how far some people will believe without really understanding what they believe or being able to rationalize that belief - (Though I feel some of them just sucked at articulating). That segment was amusing.
He ends it by setting violent images to scary music as passages about death and destruction from holy books of various religions pop up on screen. If you get past the music/writing/imagery, (which my sister felt was ending the movie on a downer), he's trying to tell agnostics, athiests, and true moderates that they need to speak up or the violent, vocal extremists will get their way. So it's back to his original point, although it felt like the "LOL religion" was sandwiched into his true argument.

Re: Religulous
I haven't seen the movie, but that's a good point about the lobbyists.
It's easy enough to stay in the closet about being an atheist. It's not nearly as obvious as skin color,a Yarmulke, hijab, or that 50 year old guy at the office that is such a snappy dresser but has never mentioned ever having a wife or a girlfriend. Like it or not we suffer discrimination. When we try to come out of the closet deists try to shove us back in. A campaign to put up atheist billboards has started recently. Wherever they go up there is a storm of complaints. Some get taken down. On the other hand thousands of Cristian billboards are up all the time. Imagine the national outrage if atheist complaints got a Christian billboard taken down.

I'm all for no religious billboards. I don't want to see them from Christians nor Atheists. They tend to be disrespectful and intolerant of each other.
Now that is a movement I would love to get behind. If you get past the music/writing/imagery, (which my sister felt was ending the movie on a downer), he's trying to tell agnostics, athiests, and true moderates that they need to speak up or the violent, vocal extremists will get their way. Re: Religulous
Funny "religion" story happened after sister and I saw the movie. We're eating at an Indian place and dad calls to tells us to order some somosas to take home for him and our stepmom. They want a veggie, a chicken, a veggie, and a beef.
At the end of the meal I'm trying to remember so I just recite what's in my head to the waiter. When I say "beef", his face froze into a look of shock. As soon as the words came out of my mouth I knew what I did. "Omg! Lamb! I meant lamb! I'm sorry!" I threatened my dad that I was this close to going to the McDonald's across the street and ordering him a Big Mac so he could have his beef.
Indian food is amazing if you've never had it, btw. "Royal" lamb in an almond sauce with pineapples and raisins

Re: Religulous
I love Indian food, shahi sabz korma (royal braised vegetables) is one of my absolute favorite dishes. Years ago a local restaurant called the Chutney, had the yummiest version. I think it was small chain. It changed hands a few times and most of them closed, we found out they opened again, but I think it was under new management and turned out to be a skanky little corner store turned into a cafe (complete with old, unused refrigeration units standing around including a complete empty meat counter), we sat down anyway, then saw a dead mouse on the floor sooo....we promptly left and I sort of lost my taste for Indian food for quite awhile.
Little story - the family that ran the good one years ago were an awesome family of characters. It was like a dinner and a show each time you went there because they constantly bickered or had some odd drama going on. There was the over-bearing mother micro-managing everything, the lazy sons sort of attempting to look busy and the stern looking patriarch that sat near the bar overseeing the whole thing, but never talking. If the mother waited on you, she'd always tell you what you should have ordered with your meal and would practically bully you into ordering the "right group" of items to compliment each other. I remember the funniest thing though, was the evening they attempted to turn a tiny corner of their restaurant (where there was a small bar that could seat maybe 4 people and three little round tables with two chairs at each) into a disco WITH a cover charge. I kid you not, they stuck a Walmart looking disco light on a stool in the tiny pseudo-bar area of the place, a large boom box on one of the precious three little tables and then set-up a cheap, oriental room divider between the rest of the restaurant and the "club".I think it was one of the lazy son's brilliant ideas because he seemed to be setting it up and then sat on a stool next to the room divider with a small cash box. Needless to say, I didn't see a single person go in there other than the sons.
I miss that restaurant.

I've eaten there 3 times now. It's quite nice in there. Most of the customers are Indian so you know its authentic. Last time I was in there they had a big TV on, showing a cricket match.

Re: Religulous
I went to this weird Indian food place called "Elephant Palace" (which I found is strange since there were no Elephants in North America during the TIME OF THE INDIANS). I put on my war paint and feathers, they asked me what I wanted. I told them "TIME FOR BIG POW-WOW". They gave me this 'curry' bullshit. WTF is that? My hunger is only held over with a bite from the still-beating heart of the seasons first Buffalo kill.I've eaten there 3 times now. It's quite nice in there. Those indians were totally fake. No feathers or hatchets or anythings. They were probably mexicans or something.

Didn't your mama ever tell you not to tango with a carrot?

I have to ask.......exactly what did the athiest billboards say? How exactly do atheists suffer discrimination? And what pray tell......do atheists need lobbyists to lobby for?Klast Brell wrote:I haven't seen the movie, but that's a good point about the lobbyists.

Re: Religulous
Kulaf, please tell me you aren't that stupid. Not an athiest here, but hell yea do they get discriminated against.
http://scienceblogs.com/pharyngula/ Dr. Myers is a pretty awesome blogger from the little bit I've read. My sister reads him religiously and all the raving has made me curious. He's posted quite a few stories on athiest discrimination. Most of the athiest stories I've seen have been about his frustration with creationism, but she's mentioned a few on discrimination.

Re: Religulous
I'm not either.
Most of this country is Christian and the most out-spoken are the intolerant branches; you don't think athiests are discriminated against? It's not about evidence, it's about "Durrhurrr", to quote Harlowe. It's the obvious.
If you want to debate what they get discriminated for and how they're discriminated against, then yea, we'll need specific events.
I linked you an intelligent blog to help you gain insight into the subject. It's your choice not to be interested.
