Foreign Action Films

Post by Harlowe »

I love action movies, and I really love when a good action movie comes out and it isn't Asian and doesn't have Vin Diesel in it. Don't get me wrong, I do like Asian action movies too, but there is an overabundance of them, so I'm bored with them.

But here are some fun ones you might have seen, one French, one Russian.

District B13 (Banlieue 13)

David Belle is awesome. He's done a lot of stunt work - which you can tell by his physcial performance and he's the founder of "Parkour", also military and gymnastics trained. There are number of parkour stunt sequences where there was no use of wires or computer generated effects. It was pretty impressive, the opening reminded me of the game "Mirror's Edge".
Parkour = an activity with the aim of moving from one point to another as efficiently and quickly as possible, using principally the abilities of the human body.It is meant to help one overcome obstacles, which can be anything in the surrounding environment—from branches and rocks to rails and concrete walls—and can be practiced in both rural and urban areas. Parkour practitioners are referred to as traceurs, or traceuses for females.

Nightwatch & Daywatch

Fantasy thriller - good & evil, some humor and action. Vampires, witches, Olga the owl, a rubber Russian doll with spider legs, what more could you want! You've probably already seen at least Night Watch. It was one of the most expensive Russian productions ever shot. I saw Night Watch years ago, forgot all about it - until I found the sequal Day Watch recently and watched both again. Loved them! The final movie in the trilogy is suppose to be out next year "Twilight Watch" (Or "Dusk Watch").

I'll have to check out District B13.

Did you read Night Watch or just watch the movie? I ended up reading the book after I saw the movie, and as expected - I found it to be a lot more enjoyable. I thought the cinematography in the movie was very well done, I found myself pausing a couple times just to look at some of the scenes. I still have yet to see Day Watch.

Funny you should ask! I thought the movie was so awesome and frenetic that I actually bought the book as well - and I agree the book was even better.

I'm tempted to get the other two books in the trilogy, but I don't want to ruin the next movie by knowing what happened already.

There are some other good David Belle clips on that site as well.

Read that as "...good David Bowie clips..." and my eyebrows went up. So disappointing.

Crazy, we saw a preview (most of that clip you linked) for this movie a long time ago and were trying to remember the name of it last night. I'll definitely be watching the whole thing soon, I love that clip. He's such a monkey.

Hey Select - David Bowie in fact does some 'Parkour' in the Labyrinth during the tripout staircase scene @ the end.

Awesome, I'm glad you liked it too - I can't wait for the sequel (B14), both Leito and Capt Tomaso are in it. I saw a few will be in it. I think it's going to be released in 2009 sometime.

I've seen the two 'Watch' movies, and they made amusing movies for my group's 'bad movie night'. Whichever is the first one was far better than the second in my opinion. A fun drinking game for 'em would be "Whenever you hear the name Ivanovich, take a drink".

We ended up making some sort of theme song for the van they use in the first movie, something like, "Devil van! Devil van! Almost ran over that homeless man! Driven around by a vampire clan!", and so on

I watched District B13 again the other night - such a great movie! It makes me want a WRX even more.

I was just looking into some B14 reviews, and it sounds like it's not going to be nearly as good as the first one. :(
IMDB wrote:"Ultimatum" is not as fun or exciting as the first film. Fans looking for more of the amazing David Belle and the stunts of parkour will find these elements lacking in the sequel. B-13 had a simple plot and explosive action sequences that still hold up well today. New director this time around and the crisp compositions and editing of the original are replaced with more uses of the hand-held cam, to less successful results.

I should have it this week from Netflix. I heard it wasn't nearly as good, but I'm still going to watch it. =)
