We can't all do that yet, Mr. Microsoft! :P As a netflix subscriber, I am pretty excited about them bringing that option to both xboxlive and psn. :)

Current generation console hardware differences aside, it all boils down to the games and there are not *any* exclusive titles for the PS3 that have convinced me to purchase the system.
Well, it didn't convince me to purchase the system, but MGS4 is one kickass game.

This ^ ^

Why is there so much buzz about blu-ray anyway? I'm happy that Microsoft decided to skip it and go straight for HD movie downloads with the xbox360. Owning hard copies of your media is so 1990s...

Not being able to prove that you have a license to your media is so 2000. Have fun trying to watch those movies if your Xbox breaks.

If a dvd player breaks, the dvd is still usable. If a media player breaks (xbox 360), the media (hosted by ushare on my computer) is still usable. I have it all copied on another hard drive anyway.

I can backup my entire movie collection with copy/paste. You can't do that with blu-ray.

Technically, stuff on xbox is tied to your gamertag.. so in theory if it breaks, you buy a new one and register your tag to it and you can download the stuff again.

no longer true

2008 is not over,
but I believe PS3 will outsell the 360 for this year

PS3 has been outselling the XBOX360 during much of 2008
Jan NPD: http://www.ps3fanboy.com/2008/02/14/npd ... n-january/
Feb NPD: http://www.ps3fanboy.com/2008/03/14/npd ... -february/
July NPD: http://www.ps3fanboy.com/2008/08/14/jul ... dominance/

More PS3s sold worldwide in Q2 2008 than 360s
http://www.ps3fanboy.com/2008/10/29/mor ... than-360s/
Sony's recently revealed Q2 earnings report reveals that the PS3 has sold 2.43 million units worldwide during the three month period ending September 30th. That's an improvement of over a million on its Q2 2007 sales figures and brings the number of PS3s around the world to a total of 16.84 million. Software sales for the console have also more than double from the same period last year to 21.1 million.

Microsoft recently reported that the 360 sold 2.2 million consoles worldwide during the Q2 FY period, just shy of PS3 sales despite a price cut which came into effect in early-mid September.

Q3 is going to be an interesting battleground, what with Sony being adamant about not cutting price.

X360 sales to date = 22 million.
PS3 sales to date = 16 million.

X360 attach rate = 8.1
PS3 attach rate = 5.2
(ie X360 owners are buying more games for their console than PS3 owners)

I wouldn't trust the commentary at ps3fanboy to be completely objective either. ;)

Right now, the X360 is outselling the PS3 in Japan by about 50% - that's a pretty scary number for Sony. The US market is fairly saturated with the X360 so you're going to see some catchup by the PS3 which still has to make anywhere near the same penetration. The attach rate shows there's much more value for a software house in coding for the x360 (and it's cheaper to code for the X360 too, which helps), so Sony's still in a lot of trouble despite a couple of quarters where they didn't dip as much as the X360 did in sales.

The scariest thing for Sony is they are still raking in huge losses on the consoles, while MS is making profits on the console sales despite the recent price cuts. Add in the better attach rates (which translates directly to more money) and Sony is hurting pretty badly. The PS3 just isn't a good system for them.

I agree with "sales to date" XBOX dominance but thats over the course of several years

I still think fiscal 2008 belongs to PS3

looking at current sales only (myopic as that is) the PS3 is selling well

Have you heard of the nightmares people have had when they replaced their X box? How about 5 years from now when your Xbox is in a box in the basement next to your Gamecube and your Sega, and the old computer you linked to the xbox?
DRM is the devil. Buying a licence to your media that only lets you use it in ways that the RIAA/MPAA lets you is bullshit. Your media is locked in to Microsoft now. You are forced to be their customer if you want to enjoy your movies.

I'm curious as to what you're getting at Klast. As Failakin pointed out, you can only rent movies through xbox live, then they are auto-disabled 24 hours after viewing. Not a bad deal considering I don't have to get off my ass to rent a movie and can play xbox games while it's downloading.

The renting aspect is cool, but the ability to stream media from your computer to your xbox360 easily was a big seller for me. I don't foresee myself ever buying a DVD movie again, let alone blu-ray. I just bought a terabyte drive and am in the process of backing up (ripping) my 600+ DVDs. Again, the idea of not having to get off my ass to switch movies comes to mind.

I still use my original xbox all the time. It was easy to mod and makes a nice replacement media host when I download a movie with a codec that isn't supported on the 360. I also love that it virtually replaces every previous console built with emulators. Instead of keeping your Sega in the basement, throw it away and play Sonic (or Mario, or FF7) on a xbox.

Didn't you illegally download most of those in the first place?

My bad. I had heard of people being screwed over games and addons they had bought over XBL when they had to replace their Xbox. I didn't realize the movies were only rented.

Tax, you do realize that the PS3 does all of that, and you can buy (not just rent) movies in SD and HD via PSN. PSN is also getting the netflix addon, just like Marketplace is getting. The PS3 recognizes Windows Media Player as a server and in my ps3 menu under video it shows my pc name with a windows media player icon. I select that and can see everything in the folders associated to it and can stream it over accordingly. Can also file transfer from the pc to the ps3. Oh, and don't forget the PS3 hard drive is a standard laptop drive which is easily upgradeable with the removal of a few screws. The PS3 system will automatically ask you to format the drive and installs it's software on it. It's very painless. BTW, I use my PSP to emulate, because it's portable unlike your xbox 1. :P

If they were screwed over, it's because they didn't buy stuff under the same gamertag. If you buy stuff via the xboxlive marketplace or the windows live marketplace, they're all associated to your live account. If you pay for it on one xbox, you can sign in with your tag and you'll be able to get it on any other machine as well. Think of it like a Steam ID. They work the same way.

I didn't know that about the PS3 hard drive - that's pretty cool. I do like that Sony made it legal to pop a different OS on the PS3. I was planning on someday buying another xbox360 to mod so I could still play on live, but I might as well go with PS3 if I can get over my hate for Sony.

I still want to get a PSP some day, but probably not until flash memory drops some more in price.

The psp uses memory stick pro duo's, the same thing sony uses for Cameras. Very cheap memory. Can get an 4 gig for around 50 bucks at a retail store. It's not too bad.

As for the PS3 you can actually dual boot the drive, say 1tb drive would get you a 250gig ps3 partition and a 750 ubuntu partition. Very cool stuff indeed. Oh, and if you don't understand the hype behind blu-ray, I'd suggest you upgrade your tv. :p

Honestly, the difference between DVD quality on a *good* upscaling system isn't going to make me rebuy my movies in Blu-Ray. It's not even enough to make me want to pay more than a couple of bucks over the DVD price. Sorry, but the real hype behind Blu-Ray is the hype generated from the movie studios as they once again figure a way to make more money from old movies.
